Overview

Searching for a BMW F 800 GS on the web in 2024 requires a degree of rigor: the name has already been used, between 2013 and 2017, to designate a very different model. Today, it designates what has become the entry point to the high-displacement GS family, a direct successor to the F 750 GS of 2018. The evolution is targeted, not revolutionary. BMW has mainly worked under the cylinder head cover.

BMW F 800 GS

The heart of the matter is the parallel-twin engine increased to 895 cm3, with a bore increased by 2 mm compared to the previous engine. In reality, this engine is not new: it comes from the F 900 R and F 900 XR, supplied by the Chinese manufacturer Loncin, and simply recalibrated for trail use. As a result, it produces 87 horsepower at 6,750 rpm and 91.2 Nm of torque at the same engine speed, which is ten horsepower and nearly 8 Nm more than the previous version. This torque, available early in the rev range, truly changes the game in smooth riding. Compared to a Triumph Tiger 850 Sport, the BMW F 800 GS 2024 slightly exceeds in power, which allows it to hold its own on country roads without complexes. The six-speed gearbox has also been revised for more precise shifts.

The equipment level increases tangibly. The 6.5-inch color TFT screen, formerly charged as an option, is now standard equipment. Smartphone connectivity allows you to manage calls, music, and navigation from the handlebar, which exactly meets the expectations of a versatile touring rider. Heated grips, handguards, LED headlight with daytime running light, Vario luggage rack, adjustable mode selector: the BMW F 800 GS 2024 technical specifications are enriched without the silhouette really changing—the colors evolve, the line remains that of the 750. ABS cornering PRO and traction control DTC are also included, as are Rain and Road modes. What is still lacking, however, is true aerodynamic protection. The head fairing provides a cosmetic bubble that offers little protection beyond 130 km/h on the highway. For a machine capable of reaching a maximum speed of 190 km/h, this is an oversight that has lasted too long.

Regarding the chassis, continuity is total. The steel trellis frame retains its shapes, the 41 mm telescopic fork and the single shock absorber both have a travel of 170 mm. This is sufficient to absorb degraded roads and marked forest trails, but you don't improvise an adventurer with this travel. The BMW F 800 GS Adventure, the more equipped version for escapades, remains another category. Here, the trail plays the card of urban-road versatility, with a seat height of 815 mm that will require a minimum stature from the rider. The weight of 227 kg fully fueled is identical to its predecessor; BMW has not managed to lose weight where the F 900 GS has managed to lose 14 kg. The brakes, with two 305 mm discs and two-piston calipers at the front, and a 265 mm single-piston disc at the rear, are sized consistently for this class of machine.

BMW F 800 GS

The question of the new price of 11,290 euros deserves to be asked frankly. This is the base price, and BMW practices the art of optional packages with a certain ease. Dynamic braking control DBC, MSR regulation, semi-active Dynamic ESA suspension, quickshifter, tire pressure monitoring, keyless start: all these features make the bill climb well above the displayed price. On the BMW F 800 GS used market, examples from previous years remain a serious alternative for those who want to access the brand without paying the full price. For the new buyer, this price positioning assumes a real conviction towards the Bavarian badge, because mid-size competition offers complete trails for several thousand euros less. The F 800 GS 2024 is an honest mount, better motorized, better connected; it is aimed at the regular driver who wants a reliable tool for mixed journeys, not at the one who dreams of rocky trails or long-distance raids.
