Overview
Being born into the GS family with the R 1250 GS as its big sister carries a burden at every traffic light. The BMW F 750 GS has never had an easy task. Wedged between an inaccessible myth and a more powerful, more versatile, simply better F 850 GS, it has nevertheless held its own since its transition from F 700 to F 750 in 2018. And for 2022, BMW is giving it a serious upgrade rather than just a fresh coat of paint. The question isn't whether it's good. It is. The question is who it’s really aimed at.

The 853 cm³ parallel-twin, angled at 270 degrees, is the same engine as under the seat of the F 850 GS, detuned to deliver 77 hp at 7,500 rpm and 83 Nm at 6,000 rpm. On the road, you can feel it: the engine has good response in the mid-range, where you really ride. The 270-degree firing interval gives it a more meaty character than classic 360-degree twins, and the two balance shafts do their job without being noticed, which is precisely their role. Parasitic vibrations that fatigued the hands on long journeys are largely controlled. With a consumption figure of 4.1 l/100 km and a 15-liter tank, range approaches 350 km in relaxed riding. For a 224 kg trail bike fully fueled, that’s respectable, even if we’re not going to lie: direct competitors, notably the Yamaha Tracer 7 or the Kawasaki Versys 650, play in a different weight class.
The 2022 BMW F 750 GS comes standard with ABS Pro, DTC (dynamic traction control), Rain and Road riding modes, and full LED turn signals. A USB socket completes the cockpit. It’s the bare minimum for a motorcycle costing €10,490. This BMW F 750 GS price deserves to be stated clearly: it's far from an entry-level price point. The 6.5-inch color TFT screen, Dynamic ESA suspension, quickshifter, or Pro modes with engine brake control remain options. BMW remains BMW: the base motorcycle is well-equipped, the complete motorcycle costs more. Those who consult the BMW F 750 GS forum know that the list of BMW F 750 GS accessories can quickly lengthen the bill, from the Vario top case to the full LED headlight with daytime running lights. The used BMW F 750 GS attracts a lot of attention for this reason, with 2020 or 2021 BMW F 750 GS models allowing access to the essentials without paying the price of new.
The 41 mm non-inverted telescopic fork and reduced 151 mm travel alone tell the story of the positioning of this machine: it's made for asphalt, small winding roads, weekend mountain trips. Not for forest tracks or rocky trails where the F 850 GS with its 21-inch front wheel and inverted fork instantly takes over. The 815 mm seat height, lowerable with the optional low seat, makes it accessible to a wide range of builds. And its eligibility for an A2 license makes it a natural target for young riders looking for an evolving, solid motorcycle with a service network that covers the territory. The BMW F 750 GS A2 clearly has a card to play in this segment, against less well-equipped competitors.
What the 2022 BMW F 750 GS achieves is a compromise between accessibility and serious technology. It doesn't seek to compete with its big sister in off-road conditions. It embraces its role as an urban and road trail bike with a welcome honesty. The 224 kg on the scales remain its main weakness in urban environments, and the catalog price implies accepting navigating the options menus to equip the motorcycle as desired. But for a motorcyclist who wants to ride daily, go on a weekend trip, and never lack safety electronics, it keeps a promise that few machines in this displacement know how to formulate so cleanly.
