Overview
Who said you needed a liter of displacement to have character? In 2010, as overpowered roadsters began to saturate the market, Benelli played a clever card with this Tornado Naked Tre 899. The idea? To retain the wild DNA of the larger 1130, but in a slightly more civilized format and, above all, much more affordable. At €9,900, it passed under the psychological threshold of €10,000, a significant argument against the often more aseptic Japanese bikes.

Its 899 cm³ three-cylinder engine is a gem of character. With 120 horsepower at 9500 rpm and 88 Nm of torque, it doesn't lack responsiveness. It growls, it vibrates with a certain Italian rasp, and it pushes you without ceremony towards the advertised 240 km/h. It’s less brutal than the larger displacement, certainly, but that’s precisely what makes it more usable on a daily basis. The electronic management of the time could be a finer point, but the essential is there: a lively mechanical feel that grabs you by the gut, without tearing your arms off with each acceleration.
The chassis, however, is serious. A mixed steel and aluminum frame, a 50 mm inverted fork, and an adjustable monoshock ensure nervous and precise handling. At 215 kg fully fueled, it’s not a featherweight, but its wheelbase of 1443 mm gives it a certain stability. The braking, with its two 320 mm discs, does the job, even if the absence of radial calipers is felt when compared to a Triumph Street Triple of the time, which is more bitey in that respect.
But it’s Italian, not an aseptic machine. The 780 mm high seat is a single block, supposedly more comfortable for the passenger, an area where Transalpine manufacturers have never really excelled. Protection is non-existent, the controls are firm, and in the city, its turning radius is not its friend. It’s a motorcycle made for winding roads, not for parking maneuvers. It will appeal to the rider looking for a roadster with an aggressive look, with a charismatic engine, and who accepts a few concessions in the name of character.
Faced with a Yamaha FZ8 or a Suzuki GSR750, more versatile and easy to live with, Benelli bets everything on emotion and style. For the rider who wants to stand out, who likes an expressive mechanical feel, and who finds the Japanese bikes too tame, this Tornado Naked 899 remains a compelling proposition. It doesn’t cut corners, it demands a little commitment, but it makes every ride memorable. It’s the opposite of an all-rounder, and that’s precisely its main appeal.
