Overview
Can a sporty Italian roadster really be more affordable without sacrificing its character? Benelli took a gamble in 2008 with this Tornado Naked Tre 899, a "dedicated" version of the ferocious TnT 1130. The goal was clear: keep the essence of the beast, but with a slightly less voracious engine and a price below the symbolic threshold of €10,000. The result is a machine that appeals as much to the eye as to the rider, but which demands a certain commitment.

On paper, the difference with the big triple is obvious. The three-cylinder displacement goes from 1130 to 899 cm³, which delivers 120 horsepower at 10,500 rpm and 79 Nm of torque at 8,500 rpm. That's less than the flagship model, but it's far from anemic. The engine remains a lively mechanical component, growling and responding with vigor as soon as the tachometer rises. Electronic management could be more refined, but the power is well present over a large portion of the operating range. It is coupled with a steel trellis frame, a tubular swingarm and a 50 mm inverted fork, elements directly taken from the 1130. The announced dry weight is identical, 199 kg, which promises similar agility.
Looking at the details, you understand that Benelli played on the equipment to adjust the price. The dashboard is simplified, with a single speedometer and a digital window, a functional choice but which may seem basic on a machine of this kind. The seat is a single block, intended to offer more comfort to the passenger, an area where Italians have often neglected. The brakes are solid with 320 mm discs, but the calipers are not radially mounted. The Sport version, for a few euros more, offers an anodized gold fork, a two-place seat, some carbon fiber elements and improved suspensions. This is where the real choice is made: the base for essence, the Sport for refinement.
Riding this Tornado Naked 899 is a frank and direct pleasure. The suspensions, calibrated for a sporty character, effectively control mass transfers. The handling is pleasant, precise, and the engine, even less powerful, grabs you by the gut with its vibrant character. But living with it daily requires concessions. The controls are firm, the practical aspects are almost non-existent, the weather protection is ridiculous, and its maneuverability in the city, despite a wheelbase of 1443 mm, is not its strong point. It is made for open roads, where its alluring physique and deep sound can express themselves.
This 899 positions itself as a charismatic Italian alternative to Japanese roadsters of the time, such as the Honda CBR900RR Fireblade or the Yamaha FZ1. It is less refined, less intuitive, but it offers a more raw, more emotional experience. Its 17-liter fuel tank and 780 mm seat height make it accessible to a wide range of riders, but its sporty heart is mainly aimed at those seeking character before comfort. For €9,900, it offered then a fascinating mechanical Italian, less extreme than its big sister, but still capable of provoking genuine beads of sweat. A roadster for the enthusiast who wants spectacle without entering the hyper-naked category, a machine that is approachable but demands a true complicity to be fully tamed.
