Overview

When discussing Pesaro in a motorcycle conversation, older enthusiasts inevitably recall the Tornado from their memories. This fiery three-cylinder engine from the early 2000s, and then its 1130 version, embodied a certain idea of sporty Italian flair, noisy and imperfect but never boring. It goes without saying that the 302 R name, chosen for Benelli’s current sportbike, represents a clear break from this glorious past. A wise decision: it’s better not to carry a legacy you can’t honor.

Benelli 302 R

Because the Benelli 302 R is no longer truly Italian. Behind the Pesaro badge lies the industrial architecture of the Qianjiang group, and the mechanics of this 302 cc twin-cylinder engine come directly from the BN 302 roadster. Thirty-eight horsepower at 10,000 rpm, 27.5 Nm of torque at 9,000 rpm, 190 kg dry weight: the technical specifications leave no one in doubt about the machine’s real ambitions. It’s not a replacement for the Tornado; it’s a contender in the 300 cm3 segment, a niche that includes the Yamaha YZF-R3, the KTM RC 390, or the Kawasaki Ninja 300. A discreet market in Europe, massive in Asia and emerging countries, where sporty looks often outweigh substance.

This assumed positioning doesn’s mean the motorcycle lacks visual appeal. The 302 R presents a taut silhouette, an inverted 41 mm fork with 120 mm of travel, petal discs at the front, two four-piston calipers clamping onto 260 mm discs. The rear receives a mono-shock and a 240 mm disc pinched by a single-piston caliper. The perimeter tubular steel frame and swingarm differ from those of the BN, giving it a unique identity on the road. At €5,000 new, it positions itself credibly against its rivals, and used Benelli 302 R models are traded at attractive prices that make it accessible to a young audience. ABS is included, which will reassure A2 license holders for whom this machine is tailor-made: 38 horsepower is well below the regulatory ceiling, and the 790 mm seat height remains reasonable.

The real debate revolves around what to expect from it on the road. Top speed announced at 170 km/h, six-speed gearbox, 110/70 tires at the front and 150/60 at the rear: all this describes a motorcycle with progressive performance, pleasant to ride on secondary roads, but which will lack arguments as soon as an RC 390 appears in the rearview mirror. The bore-stroke ratio of 65 x 45.2 mm and the compression ratio of 12:1 indicate an engine designed to rev high, but the displacement mechanically limits the sensations. For an honest Benelli 302 R test, you have to accept evaluating the motorcycle for what it is: a sporty training tool, not a pure emotion machine.

Reviewing the Benelli 302 R test over the years of commercialization, from the first versions to the Benelli 302 R 2023, Benelli 302 R 2024, Benelli 302 R 2025 and Benelli 302 R 2026, reveals more of a cosmetic evolution than a technical one. The platform remains stable, owner feedback is generally positive regarding daily reliability, and Benelli 302 R reviews often converge on the same verdict: an honest motorcycle for starting out with fairings, without pretension and without surprises. It won’t shame its Japanese rivals in a chronograph, but it will fulfill its role of initiation seriously. That’s already a lot for its price.
