Overview
What does a trail bike look like when designed by engineers accustomed to sculpting missiles like the RSV Mille? The answer is the Aprilia ETV 1000 Caponord, a UFO in the landscape of large-capacity trail bikes of the 2000s. While the competition played the card of height and bulk, Aprilia unleashed the heavy artillery of competition: a perimeter aluminum-magnesium frame that encloses the V2, an architecture usually reserved for sportbikes. The result is a low center of gravity and a motorcycle that, despite its 215 kg dry weight, proves surprisingly agile from the first few meters. The turning radius is exemplary, making urban maneuvers or tight turns much less intimidating than one might fear for a machine of this category.

Its heart is the famous 60° V2 of 998 cm3, derived from the sportbike but profoundly reworked for touring. Priority was given to torque, with 97 Nm available from 6250 rpm. On the road, this translates to remarkable elasticity between 4000 and 7000 rpm, perfect for swallowing up national roads without worrying about gears. On the other hand, you have to be patient during sixth-gear acceleration, the engine really shows its best only from 3500 rpm. With 98 horsepower, we are far from excess, but that is precisely what makes it a good candidate for a move to larger displacement: the power is accessible, progressive, and less brutal than with some competitors.
It is in corners that the Caponord 2006 reveals its sporty DNA. The chassis is of a precision and rigidity that would make more than one sport tourer turn pale. The motorcycle is agile, light in direction, and inspires a crazy confidence when the asphalt twists. Alas, the picture is not perfect. The 50 mm Marzocchi fork, not adjustable, quickly shows its limits with a lack of stability and overly soft damping when the pace accelerates or the road surface deteriorates. This is the weak point of otherwise very accomplished mechanics. For the globetrotter seeking absolute comfort on rough roads, this is an element to consider, especially since the forums dedicated to the Aprilia ETV 1000 Caponord often talk about it.
Who is it for then? For the motorcyclist who wants the character and unique style of a trail bike, without the bulk and weight of a BMW GS of the time. It positioned itself against the Honda Varadero, more placid, and the formidable Suzuki V-Strom 1000, more modern and versatile. Its major asset from 2004, and especially in 2006 when it is only offered with this option, is its ABS system. A real safety plus that complements its profile of a safe and easy-to-live-with road trail bike. Finding an Aprilia ETV 1000 Caponord used today means acquiring a motorcycle with a strong character and an exceptional chassis, but which requires a clear-eyed view of its suspension. A fascinating choice for lovers of mechanics with a strong identity.
