Apresentação

Imagine a Milwaukee purist's face when, in 2002, Harley-Davidson pulled out of thin air a water-cooled twin, developed in partnership with Porsche, in an aluminum perimeter frame. A cultural earthquake. A V-Rod had opened the way; the 2005 VRSCR Street-Rod dives in with a determination that leaves little room for debate.

Harley-Davidson 1130 STREET-ROD VRSCR

What immediately strikes you is the coherence of the proposition. The Revolution 1130 cc engine produces 120 horsepower at 8,500 rpm, with a torque of 108.9 Nm available at 7,000 rpm. These figures, for a Harley, would have seemed like science fiction ten years earlier. But Milwaukee didn't just inflate the engine of the standard V-Rod. The Street-Rod receives a 43 mm inverted fork, repositioned footpegs under the rider's pelvis, and dual Brembo braking with 292 mm discs bitten by four-piston calipers at both wheels. The message is unambiguous: this machine is made to attack.

The riding position is disorienting, precisely because it resembles nothing in the H-D catalog. You're not slumped forward like on a Japanese sportbike, nor are you stretched out with arms extended in the manner of a classic custom. The seat is neutral, almost natural, but the high controls and wide handlebar impose a physical riding style. Road King or Fat Boy enthusiasts will be put off. Those coming from the world of European or Japanese roadsters will find the bike too heavy, too long, insufficiently incisive at low speed. The VRSCR weighs 295 kg fully fueled, and that figure reminds you in slow maneuvers, with a turning radius that tests patience in the city.

On the open road, the picture changes. The 1130 twin takes its time to wake up at the bottom of the rev range, purring with the smoothness typical of large twins. It will never have the liveliness of a Japanese four-cylinder. But past 4,000 rpm, the engine stops begging and delivers a frank, linear thrust that sends the whole thing towards the announced 230 km/h with a frankly reassuring stability. In curves, the Street-Rod accepts significant lean angles for a machine of this size, up to 40 degrees according to Harley. It's not a CBR or a Speed Triple, but the steel double cradle frame and suspension do an honest job, allowing a sustained pace without the machine seeking to overflow the trajectories. And when you need to stop everything, the Brembos do justice to their reputation: biting, progressiveness, braking power. A real change of dimension for the brand.

Harley-Davidson 1130 STREET-ROD VRSCR

At 16,900 euros in 2005, the VRSCR is aimed at an experienced rider who wants the character of a Harley without accepting its traditional dynamic limitations. It's neither the ideal choice for a beginner who will struggle with the 295 kilos, nor for a track rider seeking surgical agility. It's a road bike for a driver who likes to push, a hybrid proposition between the custom world and that of the sporty roadster, executed with a technical seriousness that was not suspected in Milwaukee. The bet was bold. The result, while not perfect, is convincing.
