Overview
Sometimes you have to look elsewhere to find originality. While the world of custom bikes goes around in circles with the V-twin, Yamaha decided, with the 2000 Royal Star, to take a different path. Under this long wheelbase of 1695 mm and this imposing silhouette weighing 330 kg fully fueled, a twin doesn't rumble, but a V4 of 1294 cc. This engine is a piece of history, a tamed derivative of the Venture's engines and, above all, the legendary V-Max. The comparison is harsh: here, the V4 only releases 74 horsepower at 4750 rpm, far from the fury of its cousin. But it retains its character, a torque of 112 Nm available from 3500 rpm, which gives this giant a smooth and authoritative propulsion, ideal for long roads where the pace remains measured.

Visually, Yamaha made a big impact. The Royal Star is an aesthetic statement, an American-style custom with careful finishing, gleaming chrome, and a presence that commands respect. The low seat at 710 mm invites a royal installation, but this ergonomics is a trap for dynamism. The footpegs are so vast that they touch the ground as soon as you try to lean the machine seriously. And when braking, the system, with a single 320 mm disc at the front, struggles to restrain this mass with conviction. It is a motorcycle designed for parades, to show off its chrome in town or to run along straight departmental roads, not to play in the curves.
Its audience? The elegant globetrotter, the one who wants a distinctive machine, capable of comfortable journeys without ever flirting with the realm of sport. The shaft drive and the engine suspended in a double cradle frame ensure solidity and a certain mechanical tranquility. But with a fuel tank of only 18 liters and this appetite for gasoline due to a wide engine, stops will be regular. At a starting price of 11735 euros, it positioned itself as a high-end and technical alternative to the Harley-Davidson or Honda Valkyrie of the time. More original, certainly, but also more demanding in terms of riding, because its weight and dynamic limitations do not forgive mistakes.
In short, the XVZ 1300 Royal Star remains a fascinating object, a custom that chose the mechanical complexity of the V4 against the simplicity of the twin. It offers a unique, fluid and sonorous riding experience, but it requires its rider to accept its rules: speed is contained at around 180 km/h, corners must be approached with absolute deference, and braking must be anticipated. For those seeking a cruiser with a true mechanical personality and exceptional presence, it can still seduce. For others, who want more nervousness or ease, alternatives, such as the Yamaha Wild Star 1600 itself, were probably more obvious choices.
