Overview
The BMW R 1300 GS has made a strong entrance. Between its engine, chassis, and unprecedented appearance, it marks a complete break from all its predecessors. Success quickly found its path.
With the arrival of new technologies on the Adventure version, it also benefits from options to tempt your wallet. The 2025 model year introduced the A.S.A transmission, combining a clutch and automated gear selection. There’s no longer a right-hand lever (which disappears), and gear changes are made manually or fully automatically.
In the same vein, the radar system can also be enhanced with a rear collision warning system. If a vehicle gets too close to the GS’s rear end, it reacts by flashing the hazard lights at different frequencies, depending on the risk.
The 2026 model modifies the contents of the Innovation Package. Adaptive cornering lights are no longer part of this package and are now available as an individual option.
These more or less significant enhancements, in the always surprising wake of this 1300 GS. From the first glance, the impact is forceful: BMW Motorrad has not simply contented itself with a gentle evolution of its best-seller to avoid confusing aficionados of this iconic model. We are talking about the best-selling large-displacement motorcycle in the world in 2022! Last year, the brand with the helix sold more than 60,000 units of the R 1250 GS in all versions – more than one-third of their global motorcycle production! Reinventing such a motorcycle is no small feat. Yet, the R1300GS frankly breaks with the style of previous versions. From its more aggressive and resolutely refined silhouette to its ultra-futuristic X-shaped optics, the new GS takes a unique stylistic direction.
A rebellious youth crisis for a brand celebrating its 100th anniversary or a bold risk-taking supported by even greater dynamic qualities? The future will quickly tell. For now, the all-new and highly anticipated R 1300 GS arrives under the spotlights of the world press, under the anxious eyes of the competition and the eager gazes of fans – or non-fans – of the model, strong of its long history, its impressive sales figures, and its very great dynamic qualities that have never been questioned.
Flash-back: where does the R 1300 GS come from?
Spring 1977, BMW began seriously considering the development of a motorcycle powered by its essential flat-twin. In January 1980, two prototypes embarked on 2,200 km of extreme testing in South America. The R 80 G/S is ready!
In 2004, with the arrival of the R 1200 GS, which took over from the R 100 GS (1987), R 1100 GS (1992), and R 1150 GS (1999), the GS firmly established itself as a leader in its segment.
