Overview

When BMW decides to paint its queen in black, it's never a trivial move. The 2025 R 1300 GS Dark Edition picks up the concept of dark, stripped-back editions that Ducati long exploited to offer lower price points. Except Munich plays the game in reverse. Here, nothing is removed — things are added. The base chosen is the Triple Black, already generously equipped with its electrically adjustable windscreen, center stand, and seats redesigned for long-distance comfort. On top of that, BMW grafts on spoked wheels that give it a more adventurous, more authentic look. The result is an all-black GS, almost stealthy, that blends into the tarmac with understated elegance.

BMW R 1300 GS Dark Edition

Beneath this raven cloak beats the same 1,300 cc flat-twin, a boxer engine producing 145 hp at 7,750 rpm and, more importantly, 149 Nm of torque from just 6,500 rpm. This engine remains one of the GS's strongest arguments against its rivals. The Ducati Multistrada V4 plays in a higher power category but also tips the scales heavier. The KTM 1290 Super Adventure has a more nervous, rawer temperament. The BMW flat-twin, for its part, delivers its power with a rare smoothness, served by the Shiftcam variable valve timing and a shaft drive that frees the rider from any chain maintenance. At 240 kg wet and with a 19-liter tank, this GS remains a manageable machine for its size, capable of reaching 235 km/h when the road allows.

On the chassis side, the recipe is proven. The tubular steel frame houses a 37 mm EVO Telelever fork with 190 mm of travel at the front and an EVO Paralever single-sided swingarm offering 200 mm at the rear. This suspension system unique to BMW eliminates brake dive and provides a riding comfort that few competitors can match on long journeys. Braking relies on two 310 mm front discs with four-piston radial calipers and a 285 mm rear disc. The seat height, set at 850 mm, will suit taller riders but could raise questions for more compact pilots — a point worth checking before signing on the dotted line.

BMW R 1300 GS Dark Edition

The standard equipment goes a long way toward justifying the price tag. A 6.5-inch color TFT display, traction control, cornering ABS, four riding modes, tire pressure sensors, engine brake control, heated grips, keyless ignition, USB and 12V sockets, and cruise control. The list is long and covers the needs of most riders without resorting to the options catalog. For those who want to go further, BMW offers the adaptive radar, the ASA automated shift assistant, electronically controlled suspension, and heated seats as extras.

Listed at 22,645 euros, the sticker price sits in the upper-middle range of the adventure-touring segment. But BMW lands a shrewd commercial blow with a promotional offer that brings the Dark Edition under the 20,000-euro mark — cheaper than a base R 1300 GS that is less well equipped. A gap of 2,745 euros that makes this special edition formidably attractive for the touring rider or traveler who wants a fully loaded machine without ticking endless boxes on the configurator. The R 1300 GS is no longer the mud-caked adventurer of old. It fully embraces its shift toward high-end, technology-driven sport-touring, and this Dark Edition is the most convincing demonstration of that to date.
