Overview
Is this still a custom, or already a disguised roadster? The XVS 1300 A Tour Classic poses this question from the first glance. Yamaha took its cruiser base, that 1304 cm3 V-twin engine which belches out 73 horsepower and a torque of 105 Nm from 4000 rpm, and grafted a near-serious touring kit onto it. The result is a hybrid motorcycle, straddling the world of chrome and that of saddlebags. With a dry weight of 303 kg, it’s not a featherweight, but its weight remains civilized compared to some American monsters in the same category. A price of 10999 euros, in 2013, placed it in an interesting zone, less intimidating than Harley-Davidson or Indian models equipped from the factory.

The heart of the machine, this big V-twin, is the main argument. It doesn't seek frenetic performance, but offers ample and sonorous propulsion, ideal for long straight roads or peaceful curves. The five-speed gearbox and belt drive contribute to this feeling of ease, mechanical fluidity. One is far from the electric reactions of a sportbike, but that is precisely what the cruiser rider seeks: a motorcycle that moves forward with authority without requiring nervous management. The maximum speed of 170 km/h is more of an indicator than an objective; it confirms that this Yamaha is made for quiet travel, not for acrobatics.
This journey, however, requires equipment. The Tour Classic kit adds a large windscreen, a sissy-bar for the passenger, and two rigid saddlebags. These additions are welcome, but they also highlight the limits of the concept. Weather protection remains modest, and the saddlebags, even practical, do not rival the volume of a true roadster like a BMW R 1200 RT. The ergonomics, with a seat at 715 mm, remain accessible, but the total weight approaching 323 kg when fully fueled requires a certain vigilance at low speeds or in town. It is a motorcycle that feels better on the open road than in narrow alleyways.
Who should consider this Yamaha XVS 1300 A Tour Classic? The globetrotter who wants a custom aesthetic without the extreme compromises of a pure cruiser. The rider who prefers the character of a large Japanese V-twin, often easier to live with mechanically than some American counterparts. The pilot seeking a presence on the road, an imposing motorcycle without being overwhelming, and capable of carrying some luggage for a weekend. On the other hand, the track rider or those seeking supreme agility will pass on by. This motorcycle is a compromise, a proposition of travel in the old style, with a touch of modernity in its reliability. It doesn't revolutionize anything, but it occupies an honest niche, where style and long-distance use attempt to find a balance.
