Overview
A 1300 cm³ cruiser, does that speak to you? Back when Harley and Honda Shadow were vying for the market of large V-twins, Yamaha had a joker up its sleeve: the XVS 1300 A Tour Classic. Imagine a slender silhouette, a muscular but not obese engine, and that little air of American road trip that we love. This model is the “equipped” version of the Midnight Star, a custom that dreams of being a traveler without becoming a behemoth.

Beneath this steel double cradle lies a 1304 cm³ V-twin engine, which delivers 73 horsepower and a torque of 105.9 Nm from 4000 rpm. These figures, in the world of cruisers, are the right measure. Not the muscular overreach of a 1900, but a frank propulsion that tickles more imposing competitors without requiring the same budget. The five-speed gearbox and belt drive ensure smooth shifting, typical of this family. With a 19-liter tank and a curb weight of 323 kg, it is not a lightweight, but its low center of gravity and 715 mm seat make handling accessible even for a traveler unaccustomed to large sizes.
The Tour Classic kit transforms the exercise. The large windscreen, the passenger sissy-bar, and the two rigid leather saddlebags are the key pieces of this conversion. You gain about twenty kilos, but on a base already located around three quintals, the difference is felt little when riding. The idea is clear: to offer an alternative to heavy and expensive roadsters, with ergonomics geared towards long journeys. The 41 mm telescopic fork and the single shock absorber ensure stable handling, even when loaded, while the front double disc brakes and single rear brake are sufficient for a motorcycle whose vocation is not agility.
Compared to a Harley-Davidson Sportster equipped or a Honda VT 1300, the Tour Classic positions itself as a less ostentatious option, more mechanical in its approach. It targets the rider who wants volume without the folklore, autonomy without complexity. Its price, around 10,500 euros at the time, made it a serious proposition in the segment. But its limitations must be recognized: the announced top speed of 170 km/h and the moderate compression ratio of 9.5:1 indicate an engine designed for torque and cruising rhythm, not for nervous acceleration. It is a road bike, a two-up touring bike, which assumes its role of elegant tractor without claiming to compete with sport-tourers.
In summary, the XVS 1300 A Tour Classic is a motorcycle with character, which plays the card of integrated equipment to seduce lovers of road trips without engaging them in complex logistics. It is not the most powerful, nor the lightest, but it offers a rare compromise between custom style and touring functionality. For those looking for a cruiser capable of carrying luggage and covering distances with a dose of style, it remains a credible candidate, even ten years after its launch.
