Overview
Who is this 323-kilogram behemoth really aimed at? Should this 2009 Yamaha XVS 1300 A Tour Classic be seen as a touring machine disguised as a custom, or the other way around? Asking the question already touches on the paradox of this beast. Yamaha took the base of the Midnight Star, a cruiser already well-built, and dressed it in a "Tour Classic" kit to make it an American-style touring bike. The result is intriguing, but it slightly misrepresents the goods.

Under the 19-liter fuel tank beats a large 1304 cm³ V-twin engine. With 73 horsepower at 5500 rpm and generous torque of 106 Nm available from 4000 rpm, the engine has the build to pull the mass without a hitch. It doesn't seek the frantic top speed of a sportbike, but rather a placid vigor, a constant deployment of effort that suits long, straight roads. The five-speed gearbox and belt drive contribute to this feeling of fluidity without tedious maintenance. Compared to competitors like certain Harley-Davidson models or the Suzuki Boulevard, it defends itself more through mechanical refinement than through a raw character.
But it is precisely in the chapter of travel that the shoe pinches. The touring kit brings a large windscreen, a passenger backrest and two rigid saddlebags. Useful? Probably. Sufficient? That's another matter. A motorcycle of this weight and vocation would deserve more studied protection from the elements, more refined suspension comfort and perhaps a more generous carrying capacity. At nearly thirteen thousand euros at the time, one could have expected a more complete package to truly face the open road.
Ultimately, this XVS 1300 Tour Classic will seduce the traveler who wants a custom presence without the mechanical quirks sometimes associated with it. It will suit those who cover long distances on quiet roads, prioritizing style and relaxation over pure efficiency. On the other hand, for those seeking a true machine to swallow thousands of kilometers in all weather conditions, with all the comfort and storage that implies, it risks feeling its limits too quickly. It is a nice compromise, provided you accept its… compromises.
