Overview
The 2003 Yamaha XV 1600 A Wild Star is the Japanese challenge thrown down to the world of large American customs. Imagine a V-twin of 1602 cm³, an engine block that appears sculpted from a piece of raw metal, ready to deliver a torque of 131.4 Nm from 2250 rpm. Yamaha played big here, with a machine weighing 335 kg fully fueled, which directly targets the heart of Harley-Davidson territory, notably the Road King.

This engine is a statement of principle. With only 63 horsepower, the philosophy is clear: power is secondary, sensation is paramount. You ride on the torque, and each acceleration is a wave of muted and continuous propulsion, like a train inexorably starting. The pleasure is complete from the first few feet, without needing to seek the limit of the speedometer. The frame and suspension, with a 43 mm fork, manage this colossal weight with surprising ease. The Wild Star is not agile, but it is stable, planted, and offers road comfort that makes you forget its status as a "boat."
But not everything is perfect. The braking system, with two discs at the front and one at the rear, has the necessary power to stop the mass, but the feedback to the lever lacks precision and progressiveness. It is an effective system, but without the tactile refinement that some competitors offer. Another point of contention, the 20-liter tank has a shape that spreads the thighs, an ergonomic detail that can be uncomfortable on long distances.
Who is it for? For the touring custom rider who seeks a credible alternative and finished with exemplary care to American machines. It is not for a beginner, its weight and size require some experience. For the track rider? Absolutely not. But for those who want a twin with a pronounced and mechanical sound, without the label and price often associated with a Harley, the Wild Star was a serious proposition. At nearly 12,000 euros at the time, it posed a real threat to the competition, proving that the muscular and chrome V2 was not an American exclusivity. Yamaha succeeded, with this machine and its descendants like the Road Star Warrior, in capturing the essence of the large-cube custom: sensation before speed, style before statistics.
