Overview
Who says a Harley-Davidson is only good for shining in front of a café? The FLSTC Softail Heritage Classic, especially in its 2011 version, sweeps away this cliché with the nonchalance of a V-Twin that knows its strength. Imagine: a 1584 cm3 twin-cylinder engine producing a torque of 116.7 Nm from 3200 rpm, housed in a double cradle frame that mimics the rigid appearance of the ancestors. The message is clear: this machine is made to devour asphalt, not for the living room.

Beneath the carefully composed retro look – removable windshield, studded leather saddlebags, glossy paint – beats the famous Twin Cam 96B. Milwaukee has finally added a balance shaft, a revolution for the brand. The characteristic vibrations, this “bite” that purists boast about, are significantly attenuated. Some will see this as a betrayal, but for the traveler aiming for the horizon, it’s a blessing. With 70 horsepower, it won’t cause vertigo, but its omnipresent torque and six-speed transmission propel you effortlessly. Top speed is around 160 km/h, which is more than enough to keep up with the flow on Route 66 or on our national roads.
Where this Harley-Davidson Softail Heritage Classic really scores is in its comfort and accessibility. The low seat at 648 mm accommodates all body types, and the suspensions, although simple, are tuned for endurance. With a nearly 19-liter tank, refueling stops are pleasantly spaced. The braking, ensured by 292 mm discs and four-piston calipers, is effective and reassuring, especially since ABS makes its appearance as standard that year. Weighing in at over 340 kg when fully fueled, it demands respect at low speed maneuvers, but once underway, it stabilizes with remarkable composure.
Facing an Indian Chief Vintage or certain Japanese competition in the touring custom segment, the Heritage Classic doesn’t play the card of brute performance. Its asset is the overall experience, this blend of iconic style, mechanical rumble, and relaxed comfort. For a little over 21,000 euros at the time, you bought more than a motorcycle: a ticket for an endless road trip. It’s the ideal machine for those who want to travel with panache, without pretending to be a track rider, and who consider that the journey begins as soon as the engine spits out its first growl.
