Overview
One hundred and ten years. That is the weight of history Milwaukee brings to the table in 2013, and to mark the occasion, the American firm does not unveil a flamboyant concept or a high-tech roadster loaded with electronics. No. It releases a Dyna Super Glide Custom dressed in a two-tone Rich Vintage Bronze and Black, engraved, numbered, limited to 1,450 units worldwide. The message is clear: at Harley-Davidson, the past is not a burden — it is a selling point.

Mechanically, we are on familiar ground. The Twin Cam 96 displacing 1,584 cc produces 76 horsepower at 5,350 rpm and, in this anniversary edition, pushes torque to 125 Nm from 3,000 rpm — one newton-meter more than the standard version. That figure may seem trivial, but at that engine speed, on a machine weighing 310 kg fully fueled, you feel the difference in your gut. The engine is mounted on rubber isolators within the steel double-cradle frame, which tames the vibrations without eliminating them entirely. You keep the thrill, you avoid the osteopath. The six-speed gearbox and belt drive handle the rest with understated refinement.
What truly sets this FXDC apart from the rest of the Dyna lineup is its aesthetic positioning. The 19-inch front wheel with a spoked rim, the low 710 mm seat height, a single 292 mm front brake disc with a four-piston caliper: the bike openly embraces its old school influences. Harley often presents it as the originator of the factory custom, and it must be said the recipe still holds up forty years on. On the 110th Anniversary edition, the commemorative details are restrained but well-measured: a winged emblem on the tank, bronze inserts on the engine covers, an engraved and numbered plate on a leather tab. Nothing ostentatious, yet clearly identifiable to anyone who knows the catalog.
Then there is the question of market positioning. At €16,390 for the anniversary version, this is not an entry-level custom. An Indian Scout or a Triumph Bonneville Bobber come in around the same price while offering greater technical modernity. The Super Glide Custom makes no attempt to compete on those terms. It targets a buyer who knows exactly what they want: a bike recognizable by its sound before it is even seen, an imposing profile with an accessible seat height, and the ability to customize endlessly through the most comprehensive accessories catalog on the market. The newcomer looking to impress the neighborhood will move on; the rider returning to the fold after years on Japanese machines will immediately understand what this bike is about.
The true appeal of this anniversary edition lies not in its 125 Nm or its 170 km/h top speed. It lies in its nature as a collectible piece that remains reasonably practical for everyday use. With its 18.8-liter tank and comfortable seat, it eats up miles without complaint. The 49 mm fork and twin rear shocks do not rewrite the laws of dynamics, but they get the job done on open roads. This is not a track bike, nor a machine for rushed early-morning commutes on the ring road. It is a bike for riding wide, being noticed, to the muffled rumble of a V-twin that has long understood that performance is not always the point.
