Overview
Remembering the Wild Star means diving back into an era when Yamaha decided to make a bold statement in the custom bike world, with arguments that bordered on provocation. Imagine the scene in 2001: facing Harley-Davidson’s dominance, the Japanese brand released a 1602 cm³ V2 engine, a figure that alone sounded like a declaration of war. It was no longer simple emulation; it was a challenge directly launched at references like the Road King, with a resolutely different mechanical approach.

Beneath the look of this chromed colossus, cheerfully weighing more than 330 kg, is an engine with exemplary philosophy. With 134 Nm available from 2250 rpm, the twin cylinder only asks one thing: to be opened. There’s no need to search for the 63 horsepower at the top of the rev range; the real music is played in the low and mid ranges. Each throttle opening is a slow, rich, and unstoppable push, a sensation of infinite torque that makes you forget the weight of the machine from the first few meters. Belt transmission contributes to this opulent smoothness, making each departure a moment of pure delight. Yamaha also perfectly replicated this recipe in later models like the Road Star Warrior, proof of the success of this formula.
On the road, the Wild Star surprises with its stability. The frame and 43 mm fork handle the 335 kg with a disconcerting serenity, offering the stability of a ship that inspires confidence on national roads. Comfort is present, supported by a low seat at 71 cm and a relaxed riding position, even if the 20-liter tank imposes a width at the knees. The black spot, and it is of considerable size for a machine of this size, remains the braking. Although equipped with two front discs, the bite lacks feedback and sharp power, a defect that contrasts with the rest of the ensemble.
Ultimately, who was the rider of the Wild Star? Without a doubt, the custom touring rider seeking authentic character and reliable mechanics, without necessarily wanting to display a shield at the bar. It offered, and still offers on the used market, a credible and carefully finished alternative to American productions, with that little Japanese plus in terms of fluidity and regularity. It was a motorcycle with character, which swallowed up the kilometers with a nonchalance full of authority, proving that you could be a massive custom without sacrificing driving pleasure. A beautiful lesson in dosage, the old-fashioned way.
