Overview
So, what remains when a legend loses its way? A pure racing tool, that’s Yamaha’s answer with this R6 Race. Don’t look for turn signals or a license plate, this machine has only one horizon: the tarmac of race tracks. In a world where the Supersport 600 category has almost disappeared from the European market, sacrificed on the altar of standards and sales, the brand with the tuning forks has made a radical choice. It has removed road homologation to offer a lightweight, focused version, ready to compete directly in your next trackday or championship. With a price of €13,999, it is clearly aimed at the experienced track rider, the one for whom every gram and every setting counts.

On paper, the technical specifications of this 2024 Yamaha R6 Race don’t reveal any groundbreaking new features, and that’s a good thing. Its heart, a 599 cm3 inline four-cylinder engine, remains a masterpiece of high-revving mechanics. It delivers 118.4 horsepower at 14,500 rpm, a power that, it must be said, has been slightly detuned by the transition to Euro 4 standards. We lose a handful of horsepower compared to the glorious models of yesteryear, but the soul is intact. Torque peaks at 61.7 Nm, typical of an engine that needs to be kept in the high revs to give its full measure. It is precisely this demanding character and this screaming sound that have forged its reputation, crowned by six WorldSSP titles.
Where Yamaha has really pushed the envelope is in the chassis and electronics, drawing without complex from the catalog of the big sister R1. The Diamond frame receives a 43 mm Kayaba inverted fork, a direct inheritance from the 1000, offering a complete range of settings. At the rear, the shock absorber is also revised. These modifications, coupled with a magnesium rear frame and a redesigned aluminum tank, refine the silhouette and improve contact with the machine. The rider immediately feels the benefits, with a motorcycle that is narrower at the tank level, facilitating shifts and transfers. The braking system, already excellent on the previous version, moves up a gear with radial monoblock calipers and 320 mm discs, all managed by an ABS that can, of course, be deactivated.
But the real argument of this R6 Race, beyond its theoretical top speed of 270 km/h, lies in its immediate customization potential via the GYTR kit. Yamaha understands this well: buying this motorcycle often means aiming for competition. The manufacturer therefore offers a pack including a titanium Akrapovic exhaust, a programmable ECU, a more aerodynamic racing fairing, and a whole host of parts to optimize performance and safety on the track. It’s a clear message: here is an exceptional base, we provide you with the tools to make it unbeatable. For a rider looking for a club-race mount or a demanding trackdayer, this ecosystem is a major asset.
So, how does it compare to the competition? It is scarce, as the offer of pure track 600s is rare. The Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R and the future Honda CBR600RR, announced at €11,699, remain road-homologated. The Yamaha R6 Race is therefore not directly comparable. It assumes a more extreme and more expensive positioning. Its price of €13,999 may seem high, but it is explained by its sophisticated technical equipment and its status as a dedicated machine. For some, financing solutions such as a lease with option to purchase (LOA) can make acquisition more accessible, by spreading the expense over several years, for example over 49 months with mileage adapted to track use.
Ultimately, this 2024 Yamaha R6 Race is not a compromise motorcycle. It is a precision instrument, demanding, which rewards technique and rigor. It makes no concessions to daily comfort, because that is no longer its role. Its audience? The pure and hard track rider, the enthusiast of raw sensations who finds happiness in the precision of a tight corner and in the scream of an engine pushed to 14,500 rpm. It perpetuates, in a concentrated and efficient form, the spirit of a category that now lives mainly on the circuits. A farewell to the road, perhaps, but a vibrant "see you soon" to the stopwatch.
