Overview
Does the 600 category still have a soul on our roads? The unfortunate answer is a clear and resounding no. The European market has turned the page on pure supersports, leaving these asphalt beasts without a natural habitat. But Yamaha, for its part, has not buried its legend. It has simply relegated it to where it can still roar: on the track. The Yamaha R6 Race is an uncompromising admission that this motorcycle's kingdom is no longer the road, but the track. A brutal observation that frees the beast from its restraints.

At €13,499, the price of the 2023 Yamaha R6 Race may seem steep, especially when compared to the price revealed for the new Honda CBR600RR, expected at €11,699. But this comparison is misleading. The Honda still aims for the road. The R6 Race, on the other hand, is a bare weapon, stripped of all homologation equipment. It is not a stripped-down road bike, but a competition base ready to use. For a serious track rider, this sum is a ticket of entry into the supreme arena, with proven genetics. Incidentally, financing solutions such as a LOA are available to soften the blow, with offers around €13,999 over 49 months.
Under the fairing, which shares the aggressive DNA of the R1 and the MotoGP M1, beats a heart that has lost none of its fire. The 599 cm³ inline four-cylinder engine delivers a power of 118.4 horsepower at 14,500 rpm. Admittedly, Euro4 has nibbled away at a few ponies, but what an orchestra! The rev range is king, the torque of 67.7 Nm arrives high, and you have to work the six-speed gearbox to extract its essence. This is exactly what forged its reputation and its six WorldSSP titles. The announced weight of 185 kg fully fueled, lightened by a magnesium subframe and a redesigned tank, promises feline agility.
Where Yamaha has really put in the effort is in the electronic arsenal and the chassis. The six-level traction control, the three injection maps (D-Mode) and the quick shifter QSS are direct borrowings from the big sister. The braking system, with its radial monoblock calipers and 320 mm discs, is of absolute authority. The 43 mm inverted fork and the highly adjustable rear shock offer a frank dialogue with the tarmac. This motorcycle is not designed to loiter; its low handlebars, 850 mm seat and 17-liter tank define a pure attack posture.
So, who is this machine for? Clearly not for beginners, nor even for Sunday riders. The Yamaha R6 Race is aimed at the confirmed track rider, the amateur competitor who is looking for a reliable and extremely effective platform to beat his records. Its true potential explodes with the GYTR kit, which offers an Akrapovic exhaust, a programmable ECU and a racing fairing, transforming the standard motorcycle into a true missile. In comparison, a Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R at €12,599 seems almost civil. The R6 Race assumes its role without embellishment: it is a performance tool, period. It no longer has to pretend to be street-legal, and that's what makes it so honest and so formidable in the hands of someone who knows how to ride it where it excels.
