Overview

When Yamaha decides to start from a clean sheet, the result is worth a closer look. The 2004 FZ6 600 Fazer is not a simple restyle of the previous generation. It's a complete overhaul, from the frame to the dashboard, and to say the least, the engineers in Iwata pulled out all the stops to shake up the mid-displacement sport-touring segment.

Yamaha FZ6 600 FAZER

At the heart of the machine lies an inline four-cylinder displacing 599 cc, directly derived from the R6. Not a simple copy-paste job, mind you. The camshafts and intake ports were reworked to beef up the low and mid-range, precisely where a pure sportbike would fall flat. The result: 98 horsepower at 12,000 rpm and, more importantly, 62.8 Nm of torque at 10,000 rpm. The engine ditches its cylinder liners thanks to a new manufacturing process that improves heat dissipation. Fuel injection makes its debut, mandatory to meet emissions standards but also welcome for smoothing out throttle response. One can only hope it will also help curb the engine's thirst, since the tank loses three liters compared to the previous generation, settling at 19.4 liters. A regrettable sacrifice on a motorcycle that plays the versatility card.

On the chassis side, the die-cast aluminum frame is a remarkable piece of engineering. No visible welds, increased rigidity, and sculpted shapes that contribute to the bike's visual identity. The swingarm is 70 mm longer, the rake angle drops to 25 degrees, and the rear tire moves to a 180/55-17. Yamaha claims a 10% gain in traction, which is nothing to sneeze at. The 43 mm telescopic hydraulic fork is derived from the 1000 Fazer's unit, a mark of serious intent. Braking relies on two 298 mm discs squeezed by four-piston calipers up front. Adequate without being pure sportbike material, it's consistent with the machine's positioning. All this for a wet weight of 207 kg, seven kilos less than its predecessor. On the scales, the Fazer plays in the same league as a Suzuki GSF 600 Bandit S or a Honda CBF 600 S, its natural rivals of the era.

Yamaha FZ6 600 FAZER

The styling clearly borrows from the flagship R1, with its sharp-eyed face and razor-edged fairing. The underseat exhausts lighten the silhouette and open up the view of the swingarm — a successful aesthetic choice even if it eats into under-seat storage space. The dashboard goes fully digital, a modern choice that divides opinion. You lose the pleasure of watching a needle climb toward the redline, but you gain readability. A nice practical detail: an electronic immobilizer built into the ignition key.

Yamaha FZ6 600 FAZER

With a listed price of 7,390 euros in France, the Yamaha FZ6 600 Fazer positioned itself as a smart choice for anyone looking for a sport-tourer capable of devouring miles during the week and having fun on back roads at the weekend. Newly licensed riders and experienced motorcyclists seeking a do-it-all machine alike found what they were looking for. Sure, those 98 horsepower will never worry an R6 on track, but that's beside the point. The Fazer plays the intelligent compromise card, and on that front, it remains a safe bet on the used market. If you're wondering what a 2006 Yamaha FZ6 600 Fazer goes for in France today, expect to pay between 2,500 and 4,000 euros depending on condition and mileage. A bargain for those who know what they're buying.
