Spending three weeks in Mongolia with a passenger holding a shovel in one hand and a jerry can in the other is the kind of project that immediately disqualifies 99% of the world's two-wheeled fleet. The Ural Cross raises its hand without hesitation.

Ural CROSS / CROSS TWD

The Russian flat-twin of 745 cc is square — identical bore and stroke of 78 mm — and claims just 40 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 51 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm. On paper, that's less than an entry-level roadster sold for three times less. But the Ural doesn't play in that league. With 363 kg dry and a top speed capped around 100 km/h, it fully embraces its nature as an animal-traction rig, not a dragster. The engine pulls where horsepower actually counts — low in the rev range, on rutted tracks, in the mud where generous torque beats useless horsepower every time.

What sets the Cross apart from the standard lineup is the architecture of the sidecar. Forget the classic passenger seat and the small tourist porthole. Here, the sidecar is designed as a working platform: grab bars, support handles so the co-pilot can actively work through corners, a sealed cargo box with a locking closure, and a network of straps and tie-down rings that could secure a wardrobe if the mood struck. The geometry favors serious off-road use, not a Sunday afternoon ride along the riverbank. This is a machine built for those willing to come back dirty.

Engine protection is welded into the program, as is a spare wheel. Depending on the chosen configuration, a spade, jerry can, and first-aid kit either complete the base equipment or join the options list. An interesting detail for existing Ural owners: a conversion kit allows this crossified sidecar to be grafted onto a standard rig. The Cross 1WD is based on the Tourist platform, the 2WD version on the Sportsman. It's simply a matter of unbolting the old sidecar and fitting the new one — the operation is reversible, offering real flexibility depending on the season or the project. Brembo brakes, a robust four-speed gearbox, and dual rear suspension with five adjustment positions round out a deliberately simple drivetrain, serviceable at the back of a Kazakhstani village with a set of open-end wrenches.

The price stands at €14,590 for the 1WD version and rises to €15,190 with two-wheel drive. That's expensive for 40 horsepower — expensive even compared to competitors such as certain trikes or hand-built rigs. But the price argument collapses the moment you accept the question on its own terms: what other production machine offers this balance of Soviet ruggedness, native modularity, and the ability to cross tracks where an SUV turns back? The target audience is not the weekend rider looking for thrills on a national highway. It's the logistics adventurer — the one who counts in trail days rather than kilometers, who knows how to weld, and whose library contains atlases rather than road books.

The Ural Cross does not claim to be fast, comfortable, or modern. It claims to go where others get stuck, and to come back.
