Overview
Do you remember the time when an adventure bike was supposed to have real character, a distinct identity, far from the sanitized formats of today? The Triumph Tiger 955i, in its 2004 version, is one of the last pure and hard representatives. With its round headlights and green decoration, it looked like nothing else on the market, and that's its first charm. It's far from the consensual design of a BMW R 1150 GS, the creator of the segment, or the massiveness of a Honda Varadero. For around €10,650 new, Triumph offered a machine with a complete and classy dashboard, an adjustable comfortable seat, and a host of practical features as standard. A solid argument for those seeking an alternative to the German and Japanese giants.

Beneath its adventurer look, the 2004 Tiger 955i underwent a serious rejuvenation of its chassis. The spoked wheels are gone, replaced by cast alloy wheels, and hello to revised geometry for more agility: wheelbase shortened, rake and trail reduced. All this, coupled with reworked suspension, transforms this 248 kg beast fully fueled into a surprisingly lively motorcycle on small roads. It turns with an ease that is surprising for its size, while retaining exemplary suspension comfort. The perimeter frame, stiffened by the stressed-engine mounting, offers a healthy platform. The only notable drawback in this package is the braking. The front, with its two 310 mm discs, is powerful but sorely lacks progressiveness, while the rear remains a traditional weak point for Triumph at that time, a weakness often discussed on forums dedicated to the Tiger 955i.
But the soul of the beast, its true treasure, is this 955 cc three-cylinder engine. This legendary engine is the reason for the machine's existence. It delivers 105 horsepower at 9500 rpm and, above all, a meaty torque of 92 Nm from 4400 rpm. It is this unique alchemy that makes its success: the suppleness and strength of a twin at low revs, combined with the top-end rush and howl of a four-cylinder in the high revs. The six-speed gearbox is a real precision delight, and you can just as easily ride in sixth gear at 50 km/h as make it sing on mountain passes. This versatility makes it a motorcycle as comfortable on touring trips as it is on sporty rides, a major asset for anyone consulting the technical specifications of the Triumph Tiger 955i in search of a road-going trail capable of everything.
Yet, despite its undeniable technical qualities and the now well-established reliability of the Triumph Tiger 955i, sales remained confidential compared to the hegemony of the GS. Triumph paid for its lack of an "adventure" image and the absence of Dakar notoriety. Today, searching for a used Triumph Tiger 955i is choosing strong character, fascinating mechanics, and an authentic alternative to mainstream trails. It is a motorcycle for a demanding globetrotter who prioritizes driving pleasure and personality over brand image. It requires a little more involvement than another, especially on the brakes, but it repays it a hundredfold in sensations. A test of the Triumph Tiger 955i will quickly convince you: it is a motorcycle that has a story to tell, and what a story it is.
