Overview
Who remembers when KTM decided to shove a big LC8 twin into an enduro chassis? The KTM 950 Super Enduro R was exactly that crazy idea pushed to its absolute extreme. In 2009, the Austrian firm offered a special edition dressed up by Erzberg Graphics, a direct nod to the most brutal race on the hard enduro calendar. This wasn't just a sticker on bodywork — it was a statement of intent.

Beneath the seat perched 950 mm off the ground, the 75° V-twin displacing 942 cc pumps out 98 horsepower. On paper, that sounds reasonable. In reality, with just 185 kg dry, the power-to-weight ratio turns every twist of the throttle into a moment of truth. The LC8 engine, with its 100 mm bore and short 60 mm stroke, favors sharp, decisive rev climbs. The 11.5:1 compression ratio and four valves per cylinder confirm the mechanical unit's sporty temperament. On this 2009 Erzberg edition, an Akrapovic exhaust replaced the stock system to unleash the twin's breathing and squeeze out a few extra watts. The sound alone was worth the price of admission.
The tubular steel trellis frame handles the demands of serious off-road riding. The 48 mm inverted fork provides 250 mm of travel, while the rear mono-shock reaches 255 mm. These are figures worthy of a genuine competition enduro machine, not some tamed adventure bike for weekend outings. The tires — 90/90-21 up front and 140/80-18 at the rear, fitted with Metzeler Enduro 3 rubber on this edition — were built for unforgiving terrain. The braking setup, with a 300 mm disc up front and 240 mm at the rear paired with two-piston calipers, remains modest for a machine of this caliber. It's a deliberate choice: off-road, controllable braking beats unmanageable stopping power every time. The shaft drive, paired with a six-speed gearbox, guarantees minimal maintenance even after rides through hub-deep mud. A genuine advantage over chain-driven competitors that demand constant attention.
Then there's the question of market positioning. At €12,590 in 2009, the KTM 950 Super Enduro R competed in a category it had virtually created on its own. Neither the BMW HP2 Enduro nor the Husqvarna TE610 offered this blend of generous displacement and such radical off-road capability. The small 13-liter tank limited range to roughly 150 km depending on throttle hand, which confined the machine to committed outings rather than long-distance rallies. The claimed top speed of 200 km/h confirms the engine had plenty of punch on tarmac, even though nobody bought this bike to cruise the motorway.
Today, finding a used KTM 950 Super Enduro R is a treasure hunt. The 2009 Erzberg edition, with its adjustable footpegs, carbon fiber parts, and Red Bull livery, has become a genuine collector's item. Well-maintained examples trade at prices that reflect their scarcity. This motorcycle was aimed at experienced riders capable of managing the intimidating seat height and raw power on rough terrain. For everyone else, it was best to look elsewhere. The 950 Super Enduro R remains one of the boldest machines ever to roll out of Mattighofen: an uncompromising motorcycle built for those who consider a mountain trail just another playground.
