Overview
Who remembers the era when KTM dared to produce completely unreasonable machines? The KTM 950 Super Enduro R Erzberg 2009 belongs to that lineage of motorcycles nobody really asked for, but everyone secretly dreams about. A special edition dressed up by Erzberg Graphics, stamped with Red Bull on the sides, equipped to seek out the deepest mud with a twin-cylinder of nearly one liter between your legs. The brief is clear: turn every ride into a borderline adventure.

Beneath the tubular steel trellis frame, the LC8 V-twin displacing 942 cc develops 98 horsepower. On paper, it doesn't rival the big road-going adventure bikes of the era. But put that figure in context: those 98 hp propel a machine weighing 185 kg dry, perched on suspension offering 250 mm of travel at the front and 255 mm at the rear. It's a power-to-weight ratio that would put many supermotos to shame, all mounted on 21 and 18-inch rims wrapped in Metzeler Enduro 3 tires. This is no adventure tourer for Sunday errands. This is a tool built for extreme competitions, the kind where rocks fly and the rider finishes covered in dirt.
This Erzberg edition doesn't settle for special graphics. KTM pushed the build further with an Akrapovic exhaust that unleashes the twin's breath, adjustable footpegs to fine-tune the riding position depending on the terrain, and carbon fiber parts to keep weight in check. The 48 mm inverted fork absorbs impacts with rare authority, and the rear mono-shock keeps pace without flinching. Braking stays understated with a single 300 mm disc up front and 240 mm at the rear, both with two-piston calipers. Enough to slow down 185 kg, not enough to stop dead coming off a highway. But that's not the intended playground.
The 950 mm seat height sets the tone: if you're under five foot eleven, plan on putting your feet down one at a time. The shaft drive, unusual in this segment, frees the rider from chain maintenance — a genuine asset when riding in extreme conditions. The 13-liter tank limits range, but nobody lasts 200 kilometers of hard enduro without a break. The six-speed gearbox allows top speeds of 200 km/h, an almost absurd figure for a motorcycle capable of climbing a rock slide.
At 12,590 euros in 2009, the KTM 950 Super Enduro R Erzberg stood as a collector's item as much as a war machine. Against it, no competitor offered such a cocktail of displacement, suspension travel, and character. The BMW HP2 Enduro played in the same technical league, but with less madness in its approach. This KTM remains a standout piece in off-road history: a big Austrian twin disguised as an extreme enduro machine, sold to a handful of enthusiasts crazy enough to take it where it wanted to go. And that is precisely what makes it an unforgettable motorcycle.
