Overview
The DesertX is a motorcycle more geared towards adventure than the Multistrada. With it, Ducati wanted something more typical, more rugged, capable of kicking up stones and covering kilometers with reasonable power. But then the machine wants to spend even more time on expeditions, with people on board and their whims (like bringing spare clothes or phones). Thus, to go from discovery to discovery, the DesertX transforms into the Discovery.
It is immediately noticeable by its integrated luggage and special color scheme, a bit racing, a bit dark and mostly devastating. The motorcycle seems convinced that it can overcome any obstacle and wants to insist on demonstrating it. First step, stuff the aluminum panniers with the essentials for the journey. 76 liters of capacity are available. Then fill up the tank, start the 937 cm3 twin, select one of the 4 Riding Modes (same as the std DesertX) and ride...
...Daring to tackle difficulties frankly, because the Discovery has been equipped for it. It carries on its torso an arch-crashbar assembly to save its carcass in case of a fall. There is also a water pump tubular protection, a large engine guard and a radiator grille. In terms of touring, the protection raises the level with a high screen and a set of hand guards. Heated grips will allow you to face cold lands and/or gloomy seasons. Ducati also installs a center stand, always practical for maintenance operations and the Turn-by-Turn application to have a simplified GPS navigator.
Much like the Multistrada V4 S Grand Tour, this DesertX Discovery is primarily an accessorized model but benefiting from a unique color scheme to assert and claim its difference. Of course, this dose of equipment has an influence on the price… but Ducati makes an effort. The Discovery comes in just under 20,000 euros. Whereas a standard DesertX with the same accessories climbs to more than 22,400 euros; and without the special paint.
All this to add to a generous series of elements, especially in electronics. The DesertX is equipped with a trellis tubular steel frame controlling adjustable KYB suspensions all around, Brembo brakes, tubeless spoke rims of 21'' and 18'' fitted with Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR tires with large blocks, generous suspension travel (230 mm and 220 mm), a 5-inch vertical TFT screen and a load of riding assistance: cornering ABS, shifter, traction control, anti-wheeling, engine brake adjustment, cruise control, USB and 12V socket, daytime running lights, all LED lighting, automatic extinguishing turn signals, etc, etc…
