Overview

When does a middleweight sportbike have too much character? Asking the question already suggests the Triumph Street Triple RS. This English bike with a fiery temperament has never been a sensible motorcycle, but with this evolution, it seems to want to bite directly into the supersport category. Its 765cc three-cylinder engine, fueled by Moto2 technology, now produces 130 horsepower at 12,000 rpm, a figure that hits like a checkered flag. Beside it, competitors like the KTM 890 Duke R, despite their reputation for aggression, seem almost reasonable. The Street Triple RS is no longer just a roadster; it’s a track missile in civilian clothing.

Triumph Street Triple RS

This power didn't fall from the sky. Triumph drew on its expertise as a Moto2 supplier, retouching pistons, connecting rods, and camshafts to raise the compression ratio to 13.25:1. The result is a machine that sucks up the asphalt with rare ferocity. The torque of 80.4 Nm is there, precise and sharp, but the beast really comes alive in the higher revs. Coupled with a shortened gearbox and the Triumph Shift Assist, the engine propels you with a chilling efficiency. This is far from just the technical specifications; it's a raw sensory experience.

And to channel this fury, Triumph didn't skimp. Braking is entrusted to Brembo Stylema radials at the front, calipers that bite into 310mm discs with factory-rider authority. The suspension is serious: a 41mm Showa fork at the front and a single Öhlins STX40 at the rear, both fully adjustable. This is not a gimmick. This chassis, combined with a new swingarm and revised geometry, offers a shooting accuracy in corners that makes you forget its 188 kg when fully fueled. High-speed stability is remarkable, even if the 15-liter tank highlights the limits of an autonomy sacrificed on the altar of performance.

The electronics are up to the rest of the package. Five riding modes, a traction control and wheelie control system that are both adjustable, all controllable from a TFT dashboard. It’s complete, effective, but it must be said: at this level of play and for a price approaching €12,700, you expect this kind of equipment. The real difference with the R version, which is less expensive and less powerful, lies here, in this ability to transform the motorcycle into a precision tool for the track or winding roads.

So, who is the 2024 Triumph Street Triple RS for? Certainly not a beginner, nor even a Sunday rider. It's a machine for the demanding enthusiast, the weekend track rider, the one who seeks pure sensation and perfect mechanical feedback. It's not comfortable; it's demanding, and its style, although still as recognizable, hides a growing aggression. Finding one used, for a 2020 or 2021 version for example, can be a good deal to access this controlled madness without breaking the bank. But be warned, once tasted, its unique character and its triply charismatic engine make any comparison with the competition almost unfair. It's a motorcycle that makes no compromises, and that’s precisely why we love it.
