Do you remember the frenzy when the SV650 arrived? An accessible twin, designed for enjoyment, that turned hearts upside down. Naturally, the question quickly arose: what if we put the big V2 from the TL1000 S in it, that explosive engine which also equipped the VTR and made the TLS tremble? Suzuki listened, and in 2006, the SVS 1000 arrived. The result is not simply a blown-over 650, it's a machine with a well-defined character, with its strengths and little quirks.

Getting on this Suzuki SVS 1000 is first and foremost a postural surprise. With a 80 cm seat height, you hoist yourself more than you sit. You feel perched high, almost on a sportbike, which contrasts with its sharp lines. The dashboard is clean, but the absence of a fuel gauge is a questionable choice when you know that the 17-liter tank can empty a little quickly if you exploit the 120 horsepower hidden in the V2. For the price of a new Suzuki SVS 1000 at the time, around 9500 euros, you could have expected a few more details. Today, searching for the price of a used Suzuki SVS 1000 is a hunt for good deals, because that's where its fun/investment ratio becomes really interesting.
But let’s start this beast. The start splutters, coughs, and delivers that raw and pulsed sound typical of large Japanese twins. That’s where the magic happens. The 98 Nm of torque available from mid-range revs transforms each throttle opening into a frank and addictive thrust. It doesn’t scream like a four-cylinder, it growls and pulls with disarming smoothness. The six-speed gearbox is precise, and you find yourself downshifting for the pleasure of feeling that wave of propulsion again. It’s exactly the character that fans of the 650 were asking for, with a more authoritative look on top. What is the fuel consumption of the Suzuki SVS 1000 in all of this? Count between 6 and 7 liters per 100 km in normal use, but if you play with its torque, the figure can quickly climb. It’s the price of pleasure.

Where things get a little tricky is in its very sporty behavior. The chassis, with its multi-tubular frame and 46 mm fork, is stiff. It loves smooth roads and quick transitions. On the other hand, on rough roads or in tight corners, the steering damper can give a slight feeling of resistance to engagement. You have to get used to it, and once accepted, this defect almost becomes an insurance against overly nervous entry into corners. The braking, on the other hand, is a pleasant surprise. The two 310 mm front discs bite with a ferocity that recalls the Kawasaki models of the time, offering a stopping power far superior to what Suzuki had accustomed us to.

So, who is it for? The SV 1000 is not aimed at beginners, who might be better served by its little sister. It is aimed at the motorcyclist who has a bit of experience, who is looking for a nervous and sonorous twin for everyday use and sporty weekend rides, without the extremes and costs of a true sportbike. It doesn’t shine with immediate brilliance like the 650, but its charm is deeper. It’s a demanding but generous road companion, rewarding you with raw sensations and a mechanical character that is well marked. A UFO in the Suzuki range that has managed to cultivate its own myth.
