Overview

Two hundred. That is the exact number of riders who will one day be able to lay their hands on a Tuono R Limited without having to justify their purchase to their banker, but still having to extract 18,000 euros from a pocket that hopes not to have a hole. Aprilia played the card of scarcity with typically Italian audacity, and it must be admitted that the recipe is as simple as it is formidable.

Aprilia 1000 TUONO R Limited

The manufacturing principle can be summed up in one sentence: take the RSV 1000 R, tear off its fairing, screw on a wide handlebar, and see what remains. What remains is a streetfighter with sharp edges, dressed in black, with an anodized bronze frame that turns every visible bolt into an aesthetic argument. Where the RSV concealed its mechanics under plastic, the Tuono Limited exposes it without complex, covering the orphaned areas with carbon and Kevlar. It is the work of a master craftsman applied to combat mechanics.

Under this stage costume, the 60-degree V-twin engine of 998 cc does its job with 130 horsepower available at 9500 rpm and 101 Nm of torque at 7250 rpm. For a dry weight of 181 kg, the power-to-weight ratio leaves little room for mediocrity of reflexes. The 43 mm Öhlins inverted fork and the single shock absorber from the same Swedish supplier constitute an endowment that German or Japanese competitors of the time reserved for their track versions. Add the radial calipers biting on 320 mm discs, and you get a machine whose perimeter aluminum double-beam frame has nothing to be ashamed of compared to a Speed Triple or a Hornet 900, which are cheaper and much more accessible.

The seat perched at 820 mm clearly orients this Limited towards an audience that knows what it wants. It is not a machine for beginners, nor even for leisurely riding. It is a tool designed for riders who already know their own limits and want to push those of their mount. The titanium exhaust delivered in a kit, accompanied by a reprogramming cartridge that frees the V-twin from homologation restrictions, confirms the philosophy of the house: the road is only a pretext, pleasure is the destination.

Aprilia 1000 TUONO R Limited

The real debate revolves around the price. 18,000 euros in 2002 for a motorcycle essentially derived from an existing series is the price of raw exclusivity. Rarity is an integral part of the product, just like the suspensions or the paint. You buy as much the numbering as the cubic centimeters. For those who accept this tacit contract, the Tuono R Limited is a collector's item that is still ridden with your teeth, which is a rare and precious combination. For others, the standard RSV 1000 R offers 95% of the sensations for a significantly different budget.
