Overview

Who still remembers the TL 1000 S madness? This V-twin fury that frightened as much as it fascinated, with its rotating damper and its appetite for sudden wheelies. Suzuki, acting as a wise blacksmith, took this explosive engine, calmed it, polished it, and housed it in a much more civilized frame. This is how the SVS 1000 was born in 2004, a machine that wanted to reconcile the raw soul of a large twin-cylinder engine with the manners of an accessible touring bike. At the time, for 9499 euros new, you got 120 horsepower and nearly 100 Nm of torque, all in a chassis with a dry weight of 189 kg. A technical specification that, on paper, caught the eye of the Honda VTR and other sporty twins.

Suzuki SVS 1000

From the moment it’s started, the character is revealed. This 996 cm3 V-twin starts with a lumpy idle, that “plo plo” so charismatic that promises muscular revs. And it delivers. From the first twist of the throttle, the push is frank, linear, and the torque is present everywhere. It’s less brutal than an original TL, less unpredictable, but the feeling of power is there. It’s just better dosed, easier to manage on a daily basis. However, don’t ask for the liveliness of its little sister, the SVS 650. Here, we are in smooth propulsion and long-range cruising, not in nervous fizz. The position, with its 80 cm seat, places you prominently, a bit like on a Ducati of the time, but without being too aggressive.

Where things are a little problematic is in the dialogue with the road. The 46 mm fork and the mono-shock are rather firm, designed for stability rather than absorption of imperfections. On smooth tarmac, everything is fine. But on the chaotic road leading to Voglans, a certain stiffness is felt. Above all, the steering damper, perhaps a legacy of the TL’s anxieties, reminds you upon entering tight corners with a slight resistance. This fades once you’re into the curve, but it’s a peculiarity that needs to be tamed. In return, high-speed stability is excellent. And the brakes! The two 310 mm discs at the front, biting and progressive, are a pleasant surprise, worthy of the best Japanese bikes of the time.

Suzuki SVS 1000

So, who is this SVS 1000 for today? It speaks to the touring rider looking for a motorcycle full of character, less aseptic than a four-cylinder, without the quirks of an Italian bike. It is ideal for long getaways where its smooth engine and 17-liter tank come into their own. For those wondering what the fuel consumption of the Suzuki SVS 1000 is, count around 7 to 8 liters per 100 km in mixed use, a fair figure for the time. As for what the price of a used Suzuki SVS 1000 is, you have to search the market. Its "UFO" side, between the sporty and the touring bike, keeps it at a price that is often very accessible, well below its original price. This is precisely its great strength: to offer the sensations of an exciting large twin, with Suzuki reliability, without breaking the bank. It’s not the most accomplished or easiest bike, but it’s a road companion with a well-tempered character, which seduces you with its mechanical frankness and unique temperament.
