Overview
When Suzuki decided to play in the big custom bike arena, they didn't do things halfway. The Suzuki Intruder LC 1500, arriving at the turn of the millennium, was their direct response to American domination, a nearly 330-kilogram behemoth launched into the low rider world. The idea? To offer the aesthetics and attitude of a Harley-Davidson Road King, but with Japanese efficiency and price. The result is a show-stopping machine with a massive look, with its large wheels and long 170 cm wheelbase, clearly announcing its intentions: we’re here to eat up asphalt, not to weave through traffic.

Underneath this large double cradle frame, the heart beats with a large 1462 cm3 V-twin engine, air and oil cooled. The figures won't blow you away: 67 horsepower at 4800 rpm, modest for the displacement. But where the Suzuki Intruder LC 1500 scores points is with its torque. 113.8 Nm available from 2300 rpm, it's a wave of fat, constant traction that pushes without violence but with a quiet authority. Shaft drive transmission adds to this impression of serene robustness, even if the five-speed gearbox isn’t the most precise on the market. This engine is made for long, straight roads, not for quick changes of pace.
And that’s where the problem lies a little. With a fuel tank of only 15 liters and fuel consumption worthy of a large V2, the range of this Intruder becomes its Achilles' heel. The stops between gas stations are short, which somewhat contradicts its touring vocation. In town or in tight corners, its weight and very loaded steering at low speed make it a somewhat unwieldy mount. It's clearly more comfortable once underway, delivering correct comfort, supported by its adjustable rear suspension.
So, who is the rider of this Suzuki Intruder LC 1500? The touring rider looking for an imposing custom without breaking the bank. Because that's its ultimate argument: at just over 10,000 euros at the time, it positioned itself as the most accessible big custom. Compared to the competition, it offered a complete package – effective disc brakes, correct equipment – in an assumed style. It won’t win any performance or agility contests, but it delivers the essential low rider experience, with Japanese reliability as a bonus. A machine with character, to be reserved for those who prioritize feeling and presence over an explosive spec sheet.
