Transforming a sport bike into a tourer without betraying its character — that is the delicate exercise Milwaukee undertook with the FXDXT. Take the Super Glide Sport, one of the liveliest Dynas in the 2003 catalog, and graft onto it the attributes of the long-distance traveler: a reworked seat, an adjustable windshield, waterproof soft saddlebags. The result is a hybrid motorcycle that hesitates between two worlds, yet carries that ambiguity with a certain self-assurance.

The first thing that strikes you is the coherence of the touring equipment. The saddlebags deserve a closer look: removable, waterproof, fitted with an inner liner, they offer genuine capacity for anyone planning several days on the road. This is not hollow plastic bolted on at the last minute to pad out the spec sheet. The seat, retaining the 708 mm seat height, repositions the rider in a more neutral posture, less hunched than in pure Sport configuration. As for the windshield, its handlebar-mounted thumbwheel adjustment is a welcome touch, even if the aesthetics will divide custom purists who have no use for a plexiglass appendage on their Harley.
Beneath the 18.6-liter tank beats the Twin Cam 88B, a 45-degree V-twin displacing 1,449 cc that develops 68 horsepower at 5,400 rpm and, above all, 105.9 Nm of torque from as low as 2,900 rpm. It is this low-end torque that defines the character of the machine, far more than the peak power figure. You ride on torque, let yourself be carried along, roll through sweeping highway bends without ever chasing high revs. The belt drive and 5-speed gearbox contribute to that mechanical fluidity that characterizes the Dyna line. The 170 km/h top speed is not a promise of performance — it is simply the ceiling of a motorcycle designed to devour miles at legal speeds, not to embarrass sport bikes on a racetrack.
The tubular double-cradle frame provides a sound foundation, and the chassis package proves consistent for smooth, measured riding. But the 310 kg wet weight calls for restraint in quick direction changes, and the twin rear shock absorbers with 109 mm of travel are a reminder that this is an American custom, not a motorcycle built for urban gymkhana. The word "Sport" in the name should be read through an American cultural filter: it denotes a machine more dynamic than the average model in the range, not a rival to the Ducati Monster or the Triumph Speed Triple. The brakes — two 292 mm discs squeezed by four-piston calipers up front and an identical disc at the rear — do their job without distinguishing themselves, which is sufficient given the machine's intended purpose.
A few irritants remain. The side stand is impractical for everyday use, the turn signals become obstructed when the saddlebags are fitted, and the instrument cluster could have benefited from somewhat better legibility. Nothing deal-breaking, but at €16,785 in 2003, one might have expected more careful attention to these details. The FXDXT clearly targets the touring rider who wants to travel the Harley way, without the bulk of a big Electra Glide and without sacrificing the compact proportions of the Dyna. It is an honest compromise, underpinned by an engine that remains the true selling point of the entire lineage.
