Overview
Mandello del Lario, late 2023: Guzzi emerges the V100 Mandello from its cocoon and presents a 90° V-twin engine cooled by water, a clear break from the air cooling that defined—and sometimes hindered—the Lombard brand's technological progress. Few expected this engine to serve as the foundation for an ambitious trail bike. And yet, here is the 1000 Stelvio, reclaiming a name steeped in history without seeking to replicate what the predecessor 1200 from 2008-2016 was. It would be a mistake to confuse them; the context, the competition, and the ambitions are radically different.

This engine, therefore. Technically, it displays 1042 cm³, 115 horsepower at 8800 rpm, and 104.9 Nm of torque at 6750 rpm. For Moto Guzzi, this is historic. This 90° transverse V-twin, in its trail guise, receives a Euro5+ update and some transmission adjustments. The shaft drive remains, of course. We don't touch the traditions. This choice, sometimes criticized for its torque effect in corners, in return provides everyday ease of use and long-term reliability that chains cannot truly claim. The engine's temperament, already noted on the Mandello, should express itself with a greater degree of freedom in this higher, more touring-oriented configuration.
The Stelvio shares its DNA with the Mandello, that is undeniable. Same steel trellis frame, same monobrach, same swingarm. But as soon as you look up, the machine reveals its intentions. The bubble adjusts electrically by 70 mm, the rear section widens to accommodate luggage, the fuel tank increases to 21 liters. The whole thing weighs 246 kg when fully fueled, which is within the standard for the segment without being exemplary. The 830 mm seat immediately eliminates shorter riders, unless they opt for lowering accessories. The 19-inch front wheel, the 170 mm of travel at both ends, and the Michelin Anakee Adventure tires signal a trail capable of light mixed terrain, without claiming to reach the level of engagement of an Africa Twin or a KTM 890 Adventure. On this point, Guzzi is honest in its discourse.
Facing the competition, the 1000 Stelvio clearly positions itself in the category of premium, mid-to-high displacement road trails. The Tiger 900, the Multistrada V2, the V-Strom 1050, or the Africa Twin Sports Adventure are its true targets. At €16,499, it sits within the range compared to its direct rivals. This price includes a serious electronic equipment: five riding modes including an Off-Road, five-inch color TFT screen, cornering ABS, four-level traction control, cruise control, quickshifter, and adaptive cornering headlights. Radar remains optional, via the Piaggio Fast Forward platform. It’s solid, without being revolutionary. The Multistrada V2 does much the same with a sportier character; the Tiger 900 offers more convincing off-road engagement. The Stelvio, for its part, focuses on identity.
And perhaps that is its most difficult-to-quantify but most real argument. Searching for the 2024 Moto Guzzi 1000 Stelvio in motorcycle news is to find a machine that looks like nothing else in the segment. The transverse V-twin, the shaft drive, the monobrach, that persistent Lombard taste in every line: Guzzi doesn't make trail bikes like Triumph or Suzuki make theirs. For the touring rider who wants to devour kilometers on the secondary European road network, with a distinctive personality and without complexes in the face of large generalist brands, the 1000 Stelvio has a lot to offer. Those who want serious off-road riding will pass their way. The others will find something quite rare here: a trail that fully assumes not doing everything, but what it does, it does with character.
