Overview

Riding the Stelvio pass in the height of July means accepting the shivers at 2758 meters above sea level with an average temperature of 10 degrees Celsius. The Moto Guzzi 1000 Stelvio 2024, on the other hand, promises a different kind of warmth. That of a 90-degree transverse V-twin that delivers 115 horsepower at 8800 rpm with that particular Lombard character, that mix of assumed vibrations and generous torque that arrives from low rpm to stick the rider in the saddle.

Moto Guzzi 1000 Stelvio

It is immediately necessary to resolve an ambiguity: this motorcycle does not resurrect the large 1200 trail that was in the catalogs between 2008 and 2016. That predecessor played in the yard of the BMW R 1200 GS and Yamaha Super Ténéré, armed to the teeth to go on the assault of the world. The new arrival changes register. Built on the platform of the V100 Mandello, it inherits the 1042 cm3 liquid-cooled engine, the shaft drive, the monobrach rear swingarm and the general architecture. But above this base, the engineers of Mandello del Lario have added an adventure-oriented bodywork, raised the suspension to 170 mm of travel, mounted a 19-inch front wheel and adjusted the geometry to absorb long stages rather than track lap times. The result weighs 246 kg when fully fueled, which positions the machine in the high average of the segment without making it an uncontrollable behemoth.

Faced with its direct rivals, the Moto Guzzi 1000 Stelvio 2024 adopts a clear strategy. It does not claim to dispute their off-road crown from specialists in the genre. The 170 mm of travel, the symbolic engine guard and the Michelin Anakee Adventure tires in 120/70-19 at the front and 170/60-17 at the rear clearly indicate the priorities: road, highways, alpine passes, well-marked forest tracks at most. Its hunting ground is rather the Triumph Tiger 900, Ducati Multistrada V2 and Suzuki V-Strom 1050, sport touring trails that share the same DNA of capable and comfortable machines without sacrificing driving pleasure. On this chessboard, Guzzi plays the card of Italianness, with a mechanical personality that its Japanese or British competitors cannot reproduce. The torque of 104.9 Nm available at 6750 rpm and the six-speed gearbox with quickshifter form the backbone of a motorcycle that likes long distances.

The equipment meets current standards without trying to overdo it. Five riding modes (Sport, Strada, Turismo, Pioggia and Off-Road), a five-inch TFT screen, cornering ABS, cruise control, adaptive cornering headlights and an electrically adjustable bubble by 70 mm constitute the standard equipment. The 21-liter tank provides reasonable autonomy, the seat height fixed at 830 mm will remain accessible provided you are not lacking in stature, and the announced maximum speed of 220 km/h gives an idea of the available margin on the highway. Radar detection remains an option, as with several competitors. The accessories catalog, cases, 52-liter top case, grips and heated seat, allows you to transform the motorcycle into a true long-distance touring machine without changing models.

Remains the question of pricing. What is the price of the Moto Guzzi 1000 Stelvio 2025 in France? The brand has not yet communicated an official revision, but in 2024 the machine was displayed at 16,499 euros, which places it in the thickness of the line of its direct rivals. This is the price of an adult motorcycle, with a modern engine and a differentiating character in a segment where most machines end up looking alike. For the globetrotter looking for an alternative to the beaten paths of the market, the eagle of Mandello del Lario offers a coherent response. Not the most versatile in the range, nor the lightest either, but probably the most Italian of the lot, which for some is worth more than any statistic on a technical sheet.
