Overview

Can you really go unnoticed on a machine that looks like a brawl on two wheels? The KTM SuperDuke 990, 2009 vintage, answers that question at first glance. With its 75° LC8 V-twin, its 999 cc and that orange pitbull face, it embodies the streetfighter concept pushed to its absolute limits. On paper, the KTM SuperDuke 990 spec sheet announces 122 horsepower at 9,000 rpm and 98 Nm of torque available from 7,000 rpm. Figures that place it in the big league, alongside a Ducati Streetfighter or a Triumph Speed Triple from the same era. Except the KTM plays a rawer, less refined tune, with an engine character that shakes your guts with every twist of the throttle.

KTM SUPERDUKE 990

Compared to the earliest versions, this iteration has gained maturity without betraying its hooligan DNA. The tank grows to 18.5 liters, finally offering decent range for the KTM SuperDuke 990. No more fuel stops every 130 kilometers. The instrumentation has also been revised, ditching the minimalist gauge of the early days for a readable and comprehensive multifunction dashboard. The headlight fairing, redesigned with a small deflector, gains visual aggression even though the aerodynamic protection remains token at best. These changes are subtle, but they matter in daily use.

On the chassis side, the chrome-molybdenum steel tube trellis frame remains a benchmark for rigidity and precision. The 48 mm WP inverted fork provides 135 mm of travel at the front, while the WP monoshock works through 160 mm at the rear. The braking system deserves a test ride all on its own. Two 320 mm discs with radially mounted four-piston calipers up front, a 240 mm disc at the rear. Hardware worthy of a full-blown sportbike, fitted to a 186 kg dry-weight roadster. The result is formidable bite, progressive and reassuring, with very little to envy from what the Ducati 1098 offered during the same period. The 120/70-17 and 180/55-17 tires confirm the machine's sporty vocation.

The verdict on the KTM SuperDuke 990 comes down to a question of temperament. The standard version already suits riders who crave urban thrills and spirited runs on back roads perfectly well. Those who want to go further should look at the KTM SuperDuke 990 R, available between 2007 and 2013, with further refined suspension and engine. Testing the KTM SuperDuke 990 reveals a machine that demands experience. The 0 to 100 km/h sprint is dispatched with jubilant violence, top speed reaches 230 km/h, and the V-twin rattles your hips with the regularity of a jackhammer. This is clearly not a beginner's motorcycle. On the other hand, for a seasoned rider looking for a roadster with character, it remains a compelling choice.

KTM SUPERDUKE 990

On the used market, the KTM SuperDuke 990 now sells at very attractive prices compared to its original list price of 12,690 euros. Maintaining the KTM SuperDuke 990 requires some diligence, particularly regarding the timing system and clutch, but nothing insurmountable for a mechanic familiar with Austrian machines. Forums dedicated to the KTM SuperDuke 990 are packed with useful owner feedback to help anticipate potential issues. This machine ages well, like a good tool that has proven its durability. It will never do gentle, and it will never do compromise. That is precisely what we ask of it.
