Overview
Who can claim to go unnoticed on a roadster whose every line screams insolence? The KTM SuperDuke 990 model year 2007 makes no concession to discretion. This 75° V-twin displacing 999 cc, mounted on a chrome-molybdenum trellis frame, was designed to provoke. With 122 horsepower unleashed at 9,000 rpm and 98 Nm of torque available from 7,000 rpm, the LC8 engine delivers a frank, visceral thrust, pure-bred streetfighter through and through. On paper, the KTM SuperDuke 990 spec sheet sets the bar at 230 km/h top speed, and the 0 to 100 is dispatched with exhilarating brutality. Against a Ducati Monster S4R or a Triumph Speed Triple from the same era, the Duke displays a rawer, less refined character. That is precisely what appeals.

Visually, the 2007 model year is virtually indistinguishable from its predecessor. Understandably so: when the base design hits this hard, there is no need to overhaul everything. The tweaks are hidden in the details. A redesigned front fender, slimmed-down side panels, a more striking orange, a modernized tail light, larger mirrors. Cosmetic adjustments, nothing more. The real change lies elsewhere. The tank gains four liters to reach 18.5 liters, which noticeably improves the KTM SuperDuke 990's range and pushes back fuel stops on weekend rides. The headstock now houses a proper multifunction instrument cluster, readable and comprehensive. Gone is the minimalist gauge that drew smirks from critics on KTM SuperDuke 990 forums.
On the chassis side, the rolling chassis receives serious treatment. The 48 mm WP inverted fork, with 135 mm of travel, works in tandem with a WP monoshock offering 160 mm of travel. Braking moves to radial mounting: two 320 mm discs clamped by four-piston calipers up front, a 240 mm disc at the rear. This setup places the Duke in the company of track-oriented machines, on par with what Ducati offered on its 1098. On an open-road test ride of the KTM SuperDuke 990, the difference from the previous model year is immediately felt at the first hard squeeze of the brakes. The R version, even more radical in its settings, pushes this sporting logic one step further and remains highly sought after on the used market, whether it be the KTM SuperDuke 990 R 2007 or the 2008, 2012, and 2013 versions that followed.
Compliance with Euro 3 standards slightly tamed the geometry. A slacker head angle, revised wheelbase: the big Duke gains in stability what it loses in raw agility. A smart compromise for a machine that weighs 186 kg dry and runs 120/70-17 rubber up front and 180/55-17 at the rear. Riders seeking an opinion on the KTM SuperDuke 990 should know that maintaining the LC8 V-twin demands a degree of rigor, particularly regarding the cam chain circuit and throttle body synchronization. Nothing insurmountable for a competent mechanic, but the KTM SuperDuke 990's maintenance budget is not that of a Japanese single.

Priced at 12,550 euros at launch, the SuperDuke 990 was aimed at experienced riders seeking unfiltered urban and road thrills. Today, the used KTM SuperDuke 990 market offers examples at prices that have become very affordable, making it a gateway to the radical roadster segment on a controlled budget. A word of caution, however: this machine does not forgive sloppiness. With its 11.5:1 compression ratio and a 101 mm bore paired with a short 62.4 mm stroke, the engine loves high revs and demands a rider who knows where they are opening the throttle. The Duke is not a beginner's machine. It is a tool of pure pleasure, built for those who accept negotiating with the uncompromising character of an Austrian V-twin.
