Overview
Who can claim to go unnoticed at the controls of a KTM SuperDuke 990? Nobody. This Austrian machine was designed to provoke, to command visual and auditory space with the confidence of a streetfighter that never apologizes. The 75° V-twin displacing 999 cc, dubbed the LC8, belts out 122 horsepower at 9,000 rpm and 98 Nm of torque at 7,000 rpm. On paper, the KTM SuperDuke 990's spec sheet places the beast in the yard of muscular roadsters, somewhere between the Ducati Monster 1100 and the Triumph Speed Triple. But on the road, it's a whole different story. The temperament is rawer, more brutal, more direct than its Italian or British competition.

The 2007 vintage doesn't revolutionize the formula, and that's a good thing. The original design already hit hard on the retinas. The aesthetic changes can be counted on one hand: reworked fender, slightly redesigned flanks in a more aggressive orange, modernized tail light, enlarged mirrors. Cosmetic touches, nothing more. The real progress lies elsewhere. The tank gains four liters to reach 18.5 liters, which is a game-changer for the KTM SuperDuke 990's range. With the old 15-liter capacity, the fun was cut short before you even found your rhythm. The headstock now houses a proper multifunction dashboard, replacing the spartan instrumentation of the early days. A concrete improvement for anyone wanting to ride the KTM SuperDuke 990 daily without feeling like they're piloting a workshop prototype.
On the chassis side, the chrome-molybdenum steel tube trellis frame remains a benchmark of rigidity. The 48 mm WP inverted fork, with 135 mm of travel, works in tandem with a WP mono-shock offering 160 mm of travel. Braking steps up to the next level with radial-mount four-piston calipers biting two 320 mm discs. Only the monoblock calipers on the Ducati 1098 did better at the time. The whole package rides on 120/70-17 front and 180/55-17 rear tires — rolling stock built for sport. At 186 kg dry, the KTM SuperDuke 990 stays contained, giving it formidable agility in the city as well as on winding roads.
The geometry underwent a few tweaks to meet Euro 3 standards. Wider rake angle, more stable trajectories, a slightly tamed character. The KTM SuperDuke 990 R, in its 2007 and 2008 iterations, pushed the sport dial even further. But even in standard trim, this machine makes zero concessions on temperament. The riding position, with an 850 mm seat height, remains committed without being punitive. Long-distance testing of the KTM SuperDuke 990 reveals surprisingly decent comfort for a streetfighter of this caliber, provided you don't mind the characteristic vibrations of the Austrian V-twin.

Listed at 12,690 euros new at launch, the KTM SuperDuke 990's price sat in the upper-mid range of the segment. Today, a used KTM SuperDuke 990 represents a bargain for anyone seeking a radical roadster without mortgaging their house. Reviews of the KTM SuperDuke 990 converge on one point: maintenance demands a minimum of diligence, especially on the valve train and clutch. Forums dedicated to the KTM SuperDuke 990 are packed with useful owner feedback for anticipating major service costs. This motorcycle is aimed at riders who already have a few thousand kilometers under their belt. Not a beginner's machine, not a pure track toy. A tool of raw pleasure, built for those who want to feel every V-twin combustion pulse travel up through their arms. The SuperDuke doesn't calm down. It just pretends to.
