Overview
Who can claim to go unnoticed on a KTM SuperDuke 990? Nobody. This Austrian machine had already been cultivating the art of provocation since its birth, and the 2008 vintage only reinforces that trait. The concept remains intact: a pure-bred streetfighter roadster, built to tear up urban tarmac with a visual presence that borders on aggression. For those looking for an unfiltered KTM SuperDuke 990 review, here's what you need to know about this generation.

On the aesthetic front, the differences from the previous model can be counted on one hand. A revised mudguard here, redesigned side panels there, a slightly more aggressive orange on the bodywork, a modernized taillight, and enlarged mirrors. The original design hit the retina so hard that a styling revolution would have been pointless. The real changes lie elsewhere. The tank grows to 18.5 liters, a welcome increase that noticeably improves the KTM SuperDuke 990's range. With the old 15 liters, fuel stops were frankly too frequent to truly enjoy the LC8 V-twin. The headlight fairing now houses a proper multifunction instrument cluster, readable and comprehensive, replacing the spartan gauge of the early days. A small deflector also makes an appearance, even if its aerodynamic protection is more symbolic than real.
On the mechanical side, the 75-degree V-twin displacing 999 cc remains the centerpiece. Its 122 horsepower at 9,000 rpm and 98 Nm of torque at 7,000 rpm are enough to turn every burst of acceleration into a moment of bravery. The KTM SuperDuke 990's 0 to 100 km/h comes in neck and neck with a Ducati Monster S4R or a Triumph Speed Triple from the same era. With a dry weight of 186 kg, the power-to-weight ratio clearly plays in its favor. The six-speed gearbox gets the job done without any particular brilliance, and the chain drive remains conventional. On the chassis side, the chrome-molybdenum steel trellis frame offers reassuring rigidity, supported by quality WP suspension: a 48 mm inverted fork and a rear monoshock, both adjustable. The braking system upgrades to radial-mount calipers with two 320 mm discs gripped by four-piston calipers. A genuine step forward that places the KTM SuperDuke 990 R on par with the sportiest benchmarks in the segment.
Euro 3 compliance, however, required a few concessions. The geometry evolves with a slacker steering head angle, which brings added stability at the expense of a touch of sharpness on corner entry. The 2008 version of the KTM SuperDuke 990 feels a shade more composed than its predecessors. For fans of the most radical version, the KTM SuperDuke 990 R pushes the envelope further with refined chassis settings. On the used market, model years 2007 to 2013 can be found at varying prices; checking opinions on forums dedicated to the KTM SuperDuke 990 helps target good deals and anticipate maintenance costs. The KTM SuperDuke 990's spec sheet reveals a compression ratio of 11.5:1 and an oversized bore of 101 mm paired with a short stroke of 62.4 mm — the signature of an engine designed to rev rather than deliver low-end torque.

At a list price of €12,550 new, this Austrian was aimed at experienced riders seeking raw thrills. Its 850 mm seat height, 120/70 and 180/55 tires, and 230 km/h top speed — everything screams a roadster built to devour asphalt without compromise. Neither a comfortable tourer nor a track toy, the SuperDuke 990 carves its own path between mechanical brutality and urban pleasure. A single test ride on the KTM SuperDuke 990 is enough to understand that it's not suited to the faint-hearted. And that is precisely what makes it so appealing.
