Overview

This KTM 1290 Super Adventure S corresponds to the third evolution of this powerful and technologically advanced large trail bike. The machine from Mattighofen evolves more on a technical level than purely aesthetically for this model year.

Even the keen eye of a KTM enthusiast will immediately notice the new design of the 23-liter fuel tank, now in three parts, and the flanks of which descend on either side of the engine in the manner of the smaller 890. The silhouette, however, remains less extravagant than that of the latter.

This evolution allows for better centralization of masses towards the bottom and thus favors maneuverability. Other changes hidden behind its lines are the appearance of two separate radiators instead of one previously, as well as a new airflow system on the flanks.

Regarding mechanics, this Super Adventure naturally retains the very high-performance 75° LC8 open twin, which, despite its amazing compactness for a 1301 cm3 twin, produces 160 hp at 9000 rpm and delivers 138 Nm of torque from 6500 rpm, a reduction of 2 Nm sacrificed on the altar of Euro5 standards. A minimal loss that should absolutely not be felt on the handlebars given the already substantial power output. It should be noted that this fiery engine loses 1.6 kg on the scale and receives a new exhaust system with two catalytic converters and three lambda probes, as well as a more imposing silencer.

Despite this, the 1290 Super Adventure S gains weight, going from 217 kg to 220 kg dry. In addition to its new cooling system (two radiators instead of one), it receives numerous internal changes with a revised airbox, an optimized lubrication system, new pistons and crankcases, as well as new surface treatments. KTM announces revisions every 15,000 km.

The current model also receives a new gearbox aimed at gaining smoothness and comfort during gear changes. Alas, the quickshifter, so practical, remains an option.

Regarding the chassis, the 10 kg steel trellis frame has been modified to gain agility, without compromising high-speed stability. Thus, the steering column has been moved back 15 mm and the swingarm lengthened by the same amount. To facilitate access, the seat height now varies between 849 and 869 mm, against a seat height of 860 mm on the previous version.

Regarding suspension, the Austrian trail bike is equipped with the new semi-active WP Apex suspension. The 48 mm inverted fork offers 200 mm of travel, as does the rear mono shock. As an option, KTM offers an anti-dive system to limit just that dive during forceful braking, which the Brembo radial-mounted, 4-piston calipers allow. As well as an electronically adjustable rear preload system.

Of course, the armada of electronic aids is of the highest standard on this high-end machine: 4-mode MTC traction control, disconnectable ABS, a 6-axis inertial unit, 4 riding modes (Street, Sport, Rain, Offroad) plus an optional Rally mode, etc. All of this is programmable via new switches - which still have the good taste of being backlit at night - and via a 7-inch TFT screen.

The year 2023 brought an additional touch of interactivity with travel electronics. The KTM Connect app now offers Turn-by-Turn Plus navigation and waypoint marking during the journey, without having to stop to adjust your smartphone.

Notably, a new adaptive cruise control (ACC, Adaptive Cruise Control) developed by Bosch is present, and as in automobiles, it allows the motorcycle's speed to be automatically adjusted based on the vehicles in front to maintain sufficient safety distances. As much this automatic function may seem partially justified in automobiles, as much on a motorcycle, it seems less obvious and necessary, given that the rider's engagement and concentration generally differ from those of the average motorist. Finally, regarding comfort, note that the screen is manually adjustable via a butterfly wheel located on the right.
