When Suzuki decided to freshen up its Bandit 1250 for the 2012 model year, nobody expected a revolution. And nobody got one. The GSF 1250 N stays true to its original recipe, that of a generous roadster, built to eat up miles without any fuss. The Hamamatsu manufacturer chose to play the cosmetic restyling card rather than go for a technical overhaul. The round headlight, signature of the earliest generations, gives way to a sleeker unit, directly inspired by the smaller 650. The dashboard follows the same path, also borrowed from the younger sibling with the sole distinction of a differently calibrated tachometer. The side scoops, the exhaust line, the tail light: everything has been retouched without being rethought. An honest facelift, with no pretensions.

Beneath this updated bodywork, the 1255 cc inline four-cylinder hasn't changed by a single bore dimension. And that's perhaps where the real selling point of this Suzuki lies. With 98 horsepower available at 7500 rpm and above all 107.9 Nm of torque from just 3700 rpm, this engine doesn't play the raw power card but rather the accessibility one. The motor pulls hard and early, without demanding you wring it through the rev range. In the city as on A-roads, the Bandit 1250 delivers its horses with a smoothness that sportier machines in the segment simply don't possess. This four-pot runs square, free of parasitic vibrations, with the regularity of a metronome. We're a long way from the angry temperament of the ancestor born in 1996, that famous oil-cooled 1200 that knew how to bite the unwary. The 2012 version has chosen civility.
This philosophy carries through to the rest of the machine. The tubular steel frame, the 43 mm telehydraulic fork, the rear mono-shock: the whole package favors comfort and stability over surgical precision. At 247 kg wet and with a seat perched at 810 mm, the GSF 1250 makes no attempt to hide its heft. It's aimed at riders looking for a reassuring mount, not a track tool. The braking, handled by two 310 mm discs gripped by four-piston calipers up front, gets the job done without any particular flair. The optionally available ABS reinforces the safety of a package that clearly banks on accessibility. The 19-liter tank allows comfortable range, consistent with the machine's road-going brief.
Against the competition of the era, the Bandit 1250 occupied a very particular niche. Tamer than a Kawasaki Z1000, less focused than the Yamaha FZ1, it positioned itself as the sensible choice for the everyday rider. At 8499 euros, it offered a price-to-performance ratio that was hard to argue with, backed by a proven engine and mechanicals with no known vices. Its main shortcoming was precisely this tameness. In a naked bike market that was shifting toward ever sharper, ever more high-strung machines, the GSF 1250 cut the figure of a dependable family man. For the rider covering fifteen thousand kilometers a year between the daily commute and weekend rides, it was a sound choice. For anyone seeking thrills and strong character, it was better to look elsewhere. The 2012 Bandit 1250 never claimed to set hearts racing. It was content to keep the wheels turning, with a reliability and consistency that command respect.
