Overview

Do you remember the time when a roadster was expected to have a certain attitude and a strong character, far from electronic aids and futuristic lines? The Kawasaki ZRX 1200 R, launched in 2003, is the very embodiment of this now-rare philosophy. It is a declaration of war against aseptic sophistication, a return to the muscular roots of the Akashi brand.

Kawasaki ZRX 1200 R

Beneath its retro look, which irresistibly evokes the legendary Z1000R of the 1980s and the famous Eddie Lawson replicas, beats a lion's heart. The engine is an inline four-cylinder of 1164 cm3, inherited from the ZZR 1100 but generously enlarged. It delivers 122 horsepower at 9000 rpm and, above all, a monstrous torque of 104 Nm from 6000 rpm. These figures, at the time, made the competition pale. On the road, this translates to an avalanche of propulsion as soon as you touch the throttle. It’s not an engine, it’s a force of nature, a barrel of gunpowder that transforms every acceleration into an event. The five-speed gearbox, archaic but robust, seems almost like a superfluous accessory given the prodigious flexibility of the engine.

However, mounting this 251 kg beast when fully fueled requires a certain respect. The 79 cm high seat isn’t a ladder, but its 1465 mm wheelbase and imposing weight are felt when stopped. Once launched, the ZRX 1200 R proves surprisingly maneuverable for its size, fluid in the city and stable on national roads. But that's where the compromise appears. The cycle part, with its double cradle frame and magnificent twin-spar swingarm, is from another era. The 43 mm fork and two side shock absorbers are adjustable in every way, a necessity to try to find a balance between comfort and road holding. As soon as the pace accelerates or the road deteriorates, the lack of rigidity and finesse is felt. It is then better to calm down and enjoy the phenomenal engine pull, its true playground.

This roadster is clearly aimed at an experienced audience, a globetrotter or a nostalgic seeking raw sensations and timeless design. It doesn't have the surgical precision of a Honda CB 1300 SF of the time, nor the more modern character of a Suzuki Bandit 1200. Its strength is its unfiltered authenticity. The brakes, with their six-piston calipers at the front, are remarkably effective for the time. The finish is neat, but the whole reveals its limitations on very long distances: the 19-liter tank offers just enough range, and the vibrations at a stabilized speed can be tiring. As for the maximum speed, often quoted around 230 km/h for the Kawasaki ZRX 1200 R 2004, it is more of a symbol than a reasonable usage.

Today, finding a used Kawasaki ZRX 1200 R in good condition is like a treasure hunt. Well-maintained examples, especially the rare Eddie Lawson Replica, are highly sought after. It is a cult motorcycle, a mechanical object charged with emotion. It is not suitable for a beginner and requires maintenance, potentially aided by a good Kawasaki ZRX 1200 R technical manual. But for those seeking a machine with a soul, a deep sound, and direct mechanical response, it remains an untouchable reference. A final breath of an era when power was first measured in the wrist and character.
