Overview
The NineT has embarked on a new generation with a more defined identity. One of the most beautiful successes of the neo-retro movement continues its career and lengthens its name. It's called R 12 nineT! A good way to conform to the Heritage range, where the R18 reigns. BMW cleverly links it to the essentials of the last century when its motorcycles were named according to this scheme.
Be careful not to make mistakes in your searches, because an R 12 already existed in the range. It was a 1935 model, and the first motorcycle (with the R17) to receive telescopic hydraulic shock absorbers as standard. Almost 9 decades later, the NineT is equipped with an S 1000 R fork, BMW’s mean roadster.
But let's get to the facts. And how does this machine renew itself? Through a style that is even more retro but with subtlety. Look at the valve covers, more rounded and more vintage. A shape quite close to the time when Boxer engines only had 2 valves per cylinder. A design that is nothing random. We notice the presence of 2 lambda probes, very close to the cylinders. The manufacturer has sought to optimize pollutant emissions a little more, in order to prolong the life of this engine (air/oil has disappeared from all other families for a long time). A large sump under the engine also testifies to the sacrifices necessary to meet standards. The air intake and exhaust systems have been redesigned. Validated Euro5+, the Boxer still produces 109 horsepower and 115 Nm of torque.
The backbone has been completely revised, this time based on a single-piece main frame, lighter and more streamlined, supported by a bolted rear loop. Alas, the R12 NineT has lost its famous aluminum plate under the seat. In its place, a plastic cover has much less charisma. The new tank, 30 mm shorter, allows the rider to get closer to the handlebars. But BMW has subtly worked on other elements. Like the front fender supports, the double silencer with conical outlets, the radiator fairings, the rear light, the bottom of the instruments... Note that the air intake pipe on the right side has also disappeared. And that… wow, the rims are now spoked.
Retro but not too much. The R12 NineT is nothing like an old clunker in terms of technology. It gains the Keyless start system and still features the Paralever cardan swingarm, Brembo 4-piston radial brake calipers, ABS, three Riding Modes, traction control, full LED lighting, a USB socket, engine braking control... and many optional elements and accessories. Including a digital instrument panel, adaptive cornering headlight, very hipster side bags, spoked wheels, etc.... Note that the NineT is available in an A2 version. Only the old Pure previously offered.
For this NineT, can we say that it is a new motorcycle but or a deep evolution? Surely a bit of both. Brands are careful when they touch an icon.
