Overview

Do you remember the days when a motorcycle was recognized at first glance, when character took precedence over electronics? The Kawasaki ZRX 1200 R, especially in its iconic green and white Eddie Lawson Replica trim, that's it. A manifesto on two wheels, a large roadster that fully embraces its 1980s muscle bike origins, without frills or ABS. Its aesthetics, with its large round headlight and minimalist dashboard, are a journey back in time, a snub to today's sanitized designs.

Kawasaki ZRX 1200 R

The heart of the beast is this 1164 cm3 inline-four engine inherited from the ZZR 1100, boosted to deliver 122 horsepower and, above all, 112 Nm of torque. And there, we touch on the very essence of the ZRX 1200 R: the raw sensation. No riding modes, no traction control, just a throttle directly connected to a barrel of gunpowder. From the mid-range, the engine awakens with a voracious surge and a hoarse sound that glues you to the tank. It's addictive, powerful, and terribly direct. Compared to a more refined modern roadster, it's a return to mechanical roots.

But this power comes at a price, and not just the 7999 euros it cost back then. With its hefty 251 kg wet weight, the ZRX is not a lightweight fairy. In the city, it handles with a certain placidity once underway, but slow maneuvers require a bit of muscle. It's on winding roads that its "old school" side emerges. The double cradle frame and 43 mm fork do a good job on good pavement, but as soon as the road surface degrades, finding the right suspension settings can become a puzzle. It's clearly not a track bike. Its element is the national road, to wind up this supple engine and enjoy its comfortable riding position, slightly leaned forward.

Who is this motorcycle for? The experienced touring rider, the one who seeks a charismatic, simple and reliable engine for rides with character. The Kawasaki ZRX 1200 R technical review confirms it, it's an indestructible block. For daily commutes or long journeys, its 19-liter tank and high-rev vibrations can be tiring. But for those who want to experience the thrill of a "hairy" authentic large roadster, the ZRX 1200 R, especially the best-rated used models, remains a safe and endearing value. It's a motorcycle that is lived more than measured, a breath of mechanical fresh air in a world of standards.
