Overview

Imagine for a moment that you straddle a machine that doesn't exist. A desirable object forged in the mind of a nostalgic designer, blending the raw soul of a 1972 Z1 with the technology of a modern roadster. Kawasaki did exactly that with the Z 900 RS Café Performance, and the result is a proposition that, on paper, might seem contradictory, but which on the road, becomes an obvious, emotion-filled certainty.

Kawasaki Z 900 RS Café Performance

The base is the famous Z 900, already a solid and efficient roadster. Kawasaki refined it, fitted it with an engine reworked for rounder sensations, with decent torque of 98 Nm from 6500 rpm, and dressed it in the iconic silhouette of the legendary Z1. The Café version adds that small black screen, that bubble and that single-seat saddle which directly evoke the seventies endurance machines. The Performance recipe, as often with Kawasaki, adds the usual treats: an Akrapovic silencer that releases a few extra harmonies and a slight weight reduction, a tank protector and more aesthetic than functional engine guards. All this for a price that flirts with 13,500 euros, a sum that places you directly in competition with a BMW R nineT Racer or a Ducati Scrambler 1100.

But this motorcycle is not sold on rational arguments. Its wet weight of 216 kg, its power of 112 horsepower or its 41 mm inverted fork are figures that can be found on many roadsters. The magic happens elsewhere. It operates in this unique sensation of riding a historic machine without the drawbacks of vintage. The 948 cc inline four-cylinder engine is lively, its sound thanks to the Akrapovic is richer, and the radial front braking is effective. It is a motorcycle for those who want style without compromising on everyday performance, for the touring rider who also wants to enjoy themselves on a winding road without feeling like they are riding a fragile museum piece.

The flaw, if one can speak of a flaw, is its very niche positioning. If you are not sensitive to the neo-retro aesthetics, to this very specific evocation of the Z1R café racer, you will find its price high and you will turn to a standard Z 900, more affordable and more neutral. But if this Godier & Genoud touch speaks to you, if you dream of this line without wanting to manage the quirks of a real old machine, then the Z 900 RS Café Performance is probably one of the most accomplished and coherent propositions on the market. It is not the fastest, nor the lightest, nor the most versatile, but it is undoubtedly the one that offers the greatest injection of pure emotion, mixed with modern technical competence. A successful exercise in style, which finds its audience among enthusiasts looking for a unique character.
