Overview

When we talk about extravagance in the custom world, one name inevitably comes up, that of a Japanese colossus who came to challenge American giants on their own turf. Imagine an engine where each cylinder exceeds a liter, a crankshaft that weighs its character, and a physical presence that would make a Harley Screamin' Eagle pale. We are talking about the Kawasaki VN 2000, a machine that, in 2004, laid down a very personal definition of the cruiser on the asphalt: raw power, served with a mechanical arrogance that is absolutely fascinating.

Kawasaki VN 2000 (VN2000-A1)

Its heart is a cathedral of metal, a 2053 cm³ liquid-cooled V-twin. The figures speak for themselves: 103 horsepower at 4800 rpm, which is respectable, but it is the torque that you need to face. 176.5 Nm available from 3200 rpm, it's a slap. A slap that sticks you to the low seat's 69 cm and makes most other twins feel like leaf blowers. Belt transmission and a five-speed gearbox manage this energy with a disconcerting smoothness for such a massive block. In the city, it purrs without betraying its strength, but a quarter turn of the throttle is enough to awaken the giant and propel you towards the horizon with an authority that belongs to it alone.

But piloting this work of art, weighing 373 kg fully fueled, is nothing like a bike ride. With a wheelbase of 1735 mm and tires of 150 at the front and 200 at the rear, you don't slalom, you negotiate. You need to anticipate, start your counter-steering with a certain solemnity, and accept that hairpin turns are a foreign land. Yet, once launched into a wide curve, it surprises with its balance. Braking, with its two 300 mm front discs, is up to the task. It's not about racing, but about majestically dominating a winding mountain road, enjoying this omnipresent torque that makes overtaking as easy as breathing.

Who is it for? Certainly not the beginner, intimidated by its weight and size. It is the motorcycle of the globetrotter who wants space, comfort, and an overwhelming presence. Of the custom purist who seeks the ultimate sensation of torque and a muscular, chrome aesthetic that commands respect at every parking. At over 17,000 euros at the time, it was a financial commitment to match its dimensions.

Faced with a Harley-Davidson Ultra Classic, more touring-oriented, or a Honda VTX 1800, more lively, the VN 2000 positions itself as a luxury brute. It does not seek absolute refinement or versatility. It is the expression of a simple philosophy: extravagance as a virtue. It is not perfect, it is excessive. And it is precisely in this assumed exaggeration, in this deep purr that transforms into a visceral roar, that lies all its charm. An icon that does not ask to be loved, but to be admired, and above all, felt.
