Overview

Nearly fifty thousand euros for a Harley. At that price, you’re not buying a motorcycle, you’re subscribing to a mechanical religion, and the CVO Road Glide ST is its exterminating archangel. It doesn’t seek to seduce the traditional biker, no. It squarely targets the rider who, tired of seeing Indian dominate the King of the Baggers championship podiums, wants a road-warrior weapon stamped with the eagle and stars.

Harley-Davidson CVO 1980 Road Glide ST FLTRXSTSE

Its heart beats with the fury of an exclusive 121 High Output Milwaukee-Eight, boosted to 1977 cm3. Screamin’ Eagle engineers have infused it with their racing expertise: modified camshafts, an oversized intake delivering 26% more air. The result is a torque monster, 193 Nm that arrive early and hit hard, and a horsepower rating of 126 that make you forget old, wheezy V-Twins. Compared to the base 117 engine, it’s another world. The six-speed gearbox has even received shorter gearing to exploit this fury, with a redline pushed back to 5900 rpm. A Harley that likes to rev, that’s a change.

But raw performance isn’t enough. Harley understood that a solid foundation was needed. The classic dual-cradle frame accommodates a 47 mm Showa inverted fork and lateral shock absorbers, all fully adjustable. Braking, entrusted to Brembo with radial four-piston calipers, inspires rare confidence on a machine of this size. The real feat lies in the weight reduction. Carbon fiber for the fender and fairings, titanium for the mufflers, lightweight wheels: the whole allows you to shave 12 kg compared to a standard CVO, for a total of 363 kg dry weight. When stopped, it’s still a mountain, but once launched, the beast reveals itself to be surprisingly agile for a bagger, facilitated by this fixed fairing anchored to the frame that doesn’t load the steering.

Where it crushes the competition is in its electronics. Six riding modes, including two "Track" dedicated to the circuit, finely control power, traction control, and cornering ABS. You go from rainy docility to track aggression where you can even decouple the brakes. The dashboard is a giant, customizable touchscreen, serving as an onboard computer and entertainment center, with a 500-watt Rockford Fosgate sound system. It is both its asset and its paradox: this ultra-technical machine boasts an exclusive three-tone paint scheme, the optional price of which could alone buy an entry-level motorcycle.

So, who is it for? Certainly not for the novice. The CVO Road Glide ST is the ultimate weapon of the demanding bagger rider, the one who wants the comfort of an American GT, the prestige of a limited edition CVO, but also the performance of a machine capable of holding its own on the track against an Indian Challenger RR. At this stratospheric price, it has no real direct competitor. It exists simply to prove that Harley-Davidson can, when it really wants to, build the most violent and sophisticated cruiser touring machine on the planet. It’s a statement. Excessive, terribly expensive, but irresistibly effective.
