Overview

We were watching closely, and yet, the 2016 Kawasaki KX 250F doesn’t change a thing. It was the 2015 model that had devoured everything, receiving a package of modifications intended to keep the green team at the top of the tough 250 four-stroke motocross category. The objective has remained unchanged for decades: to put riders, from intermediate to pro, on the highest step. And it must be said that the track record speaks for itself, with titles earned here and there against the fierce competition from KTM, Yamaha and Honda.

Kawasaki KX 250F

Under the 6-liter tank, the 249 cm³ single-cylinder remains a gem. Kawasaki had hit hard the previous year with the arrival of a second injector, a first on a production model, aiming to boost the low and mid range. Paired with a lighter “bridge-box” piston, the result is an engine that explodes when the throttle is opened, with a crisp response and power that reaches 43 horsepower. All this for a declared weight of 106 kg fully fueled, a mass that places the KX in the race against a KTM 250 SX-F often cited as a reference. The frame, for its part, is a remarkably narrow perimeter aluminum frame, designed to hug tight corners.

But where the Kawasaki really makes the difference is in its “ready to race” approach. The 48 mm Showa SFF air fork with separate functions, with preload, compression and rebound adjustments within reach of a screwdriver, is a precision weapon. At the rear, the Uni-Trak shock follows the same philosophy, with fine adjustments to tame the worst whoops. Petal disc brakes, the front one oversized, offer bite and progression that inspire absolute confidence in late braking phases. And then there are these little extras that make the racer smile: Launch Control for standing starts, three interchangeable engine maps via a simple coupler, and adjustable ergonomics (handlebars, footpegs) to adapt to any build.

Who is this machine for? Clearly not the beginner looking for a leisure bike. The KX 250F is a pure competition weapon, demanding, thirsty for maintenance and tailored for the track. Its price of 7999 euros places it in the big leagues, facing equally formidable competitors. Its strength? Versatility and the ability to disappear, allowing the rider to focus on their trajectory. Its weakness? Perhaps this lack of novelty for 2016, which leaves room for other brands to claim their innovation. But don't be fooled, beneath its familiar appearance, it remains one of the most effective and accomplished mounts for those who want to burn rubber in the championship. A true green bomb, simply.
