Overview
Do you remember that era when a 500 cm³ motorcycle was a serious machine, a true key to autonomy and unfiltered pleasure? The Kawasaki GPZ 500 S, launched in the late 1980s, embodied this philosophy for nearly fifteen years with remarkable consistency. From the first version of the Kawasaki GPZ 500 S in 1989 to the ultimate 2003 model year, the recipe barely changed, and that’s its strength. After a few initial adjustments such as the adoption of a rear disc brake and 17-inch rims on the Kawasaki GPZ 500 S in 1994, the machine froze, changing only colors. For many, this loyalty to the initial principles is what makes a used Kawasaki GPZ 500 S so valuable today.

Its heart beats to the rhythm of a 499 cm³ inline twin-cylinder engine delivering 60 horsepower at 9800 rpm. Don't look for the suppleness of a large twin; this engine is a pure product of the Kawasaki school: you need to rev it to express itself, and then it becomes fierce, sonorous, and incredibly lively. With 47 Nm of torque arriving high in the rev range, it certainly lacks punch at low rpm, but once underway, it pulls with a surprising surge for a machine weighing 202 kg dry. This liveliness is served by a simple and effective chassis, a steel double cradle that gives the motorcycle the agility of a young beginner. The riding position, neither too aggressive nor too relaxed, makes it a perfect road companion, capable of entire days without fatigue, true to its sport touring label.
But not everything is perfect in this idyllic picture. When you start to really push it, on a winding mountain road for example, you encounter the limits of a braking system a little too light for the sporty temperament of the machine. A single disc at the front and rear is now considered minimalist, and the bite lacks aggression when the pace accelerates. This is the Achilles' heel of this aspiring sportbike, a legacy of its 1980s design that Kawasaki has never really revised. Yet, this weakness is easily forgiven given its other assets: legendary reliability, reasonable fuel consumption with its 18-liter tank, and accessibility that makes it an ideal Kawasaki GPZ 500 S motorcycle for a young A2 license holder or a rider looking for a simple, efficient, and charismatic mount.
Today, finding a used Kawasaki GPZ 500 S in France is a treasure hunt for purists. Its understated and timeless look even lends itself to café racer conversions, a popular project for DIY enthusiasts. With a new price that peaked around 5600 euros at the time, its value on the used market remains very attractive. So, is it the perfect sportbike? No. But it's an honest motorcycle, without pretension or electronics, that brings you back to the essentials of riding. It doesn't do the work for you; it asks you to shift gears, dose your braking well, and in return, it offers raw sensations and a genuine smile. A lesson in mechanics and pleasure on two wheels, simply.
