Overview
What drives a century-old manufacturer to fit a radiator on a custom bike? The answer can be summed up in two words: Indian Scout. Born in the 1920s, resurrected nearly a century later, this Indian Scout motorcycle carries on its shoulders a heritage as heavy as the bronze of Burt Munro's trophies. The 2021 model year doesn't revolutionize anything, that's true. No technical upheaval, no aesthetic overhaul. But the foundation remains so solid that you readily forgive Indian for settling on a new color palette. The real evolutions stacked up between 2017 and 2020: cartridge fork, revised braking with floating discs, USB port, passenger equipment as standard. Each year added its coat of varnish to an already well-finished model.

Beneath the 12.5-liter tank beats a liquid-cooled 1133 cc V-twin. Heresy for custom purists who swear by air-cooled fins, a pragmatic choice for everyone else. This engine develops 94 horsepower and 97.6 Nm of torque at 6000 rpm — figures that place the bike far ahead of a Harley-Davidson Sportster 883 and neck-and-neck with the Iron 1200. Indian adopted liquid cooling fifteen years after Milwaukee. Late, perhaps. Effective, without question. The engine exudes modernity with its cylinder heads machined like industrial sculpture, its calibrated fuel injection, and its six-speed gearbox driving a final belt. In practice, this twin proves lively, responsive from the mid-range, capable of pushing the 254 kg wet weight up to 200 km/h. This is closer to a power-cruiser than a leisurely boulevard custom. Indian Scout customization enthusiasts will find a wide array of parts in the catalog to transform the machine into a bobber, custom, or rogue version according to their tastes.
The aluminum cast chassis surprises with its relative lightness in this category. At 246 kg dry, the Scout positions itself as an athlete among the usual American behemoths. The 1576 mm wheelbase and the seat planted just 656 mm off the ground create a low, stretched, reassuring motorcycle for smaller riders. The telescopic fork and twin rear shocks do the job without claiming to rival a sportbike, but the handling remains sound and predictable. The braking, however, deserves frank discussion: a single front disc with a two-piston caliper, a single rear disc with a single-piston caliper. On a machine sold at 14,590 euros, you'd expect a dual front disc setup as standard. The optional ABS partially makes up for it, but the Japanese competition often offers more for less on this particular point.

The 2021 Scout is aimed at riders who want to ride an Indian without mortgaging their garage. It's the entry point to the range, accessible in an A2-compliant version with a restrictor that shaves off only six horsepower. For those seeking a used Indian Scout or a pre-owned 2021 Indian Scout Bobber, the market is starting to offer well-maintained machines at attractive prices. The Indian Scout Bobber variant, more stripped-down, more visually aggressive, appeals to those who prefer raw style over classic elegance. And for tighter budgets, the Indian Scout Sixty and its 999 cc offer a relevant alternative without sacrificing riding pleasure.
At its core, this Scout plays a unique tune. It has neither the brutality of a Ducati Diavel nor the unapologetically retro charm of a Triumph Bonneville Bobber. It carves its own path, somewhere between American tradition and contemporary engineering, with enough character to stand out in a parking lot and enough versatility to serve as a daily rider. A custom Indian Scout that rides like a roadster — that may be its best definition.
