Overview
Has Harley-Davidson finally decided to shake off its torpor and tremble the asphalt with a true modern engine? The answer arrives in 2007 with the VRSCA V-Rod, a machine that has the effect of a bomb in the world of customs. Where other models from the brand purr with their air-cooled twin, this one arrives with a block signed by Porsche, a 60° V-twin called Revolution. Liquid cooling, double ACT, four valves per cylinder: we are at the antipodes of Milwaukee tradition. This 1131 cm3 delivers 115 horsepower at 8500 rpm, a power that immediately puts the old 1584 cc Twin Cam in the shade. We are talking about a real sports engine here, transplanted into a custom dragster frame.

The result is a motorcycle that imposes its physique. It is long, low, with a 660 mm seat that anchors the rider to the machine. The faux aluminum tank, the full wheels, and the sparkling chrome force the gaze, even from the most indifferent. But beneath this muscular beauty of nearly 284 kg fully fueled, there is a lively soul. The torque of 98 Nm arrives high, at 7000 rpm, which requires playing with the five-speed gearbox to get the most out of this Harley-Davidson VRSCA V-Rod. The maximum speed flirts with 210 km/h, an honorable performance but which places the V-Rod in an ambiguous category: too fast for Harley purists, not sharp enough to compete with Japanese sportbikes of the time.
On the road, it behaves like an improved custom. The 49 mm telehydraulic fork and the two lateral shock absorbers offer an acceptable compromise, but the weight remains a brake on agility. The braking, with its 292 mm discs and four-piston calipers, is effective without being brutal. It is a motorcycle for those who want character without completely sacrificing performance. It targets the globetrotter who likes radical lines and the dilettante racer, but it will not convince the hard-core sports enthusiast. With a fuel tank of only 14 liters and a price at the time of 19,369 euros, it was a statement, a declaration of intent, more than a rational proposition.
In short, the V-Rod remains a UFO in the Harley-Davidson galaxy. It opened a breach, showing that the house could innovate. But it did not really create a lineage, remaining as a bold and isolated experiment. For the rider looking for a custom with a true modern engine and a dragster aesthetic, it was a unique option. For others, it remained a curiosity, beautiful and brutal, but ultimately without descendants.
