Overview
The XDiavel was the last recipient of a large-displacement Ducati V-Twin. The ultimate recipient of a lineage of impressive bore engines. With the new XDiavel V4, the last little twin-cylinder from Bologna, the famous Testastretta DVT 1262, concludes its career and passes the baton to Ducati’s now flagship engine: the V4.
Less exotic, less austere in its curves than the XDiavel V2, this new cruiser is nonetheless muscular and charismatic. It knows and can show its teeth, with its engine of a different caliber.
After the Panigale, Multistrada, Streetfighter and Diavel, it's the XDiavel's turn to be propelled by the V4 cylinder engine. The motorcycle loses its engine architecture culture for a more compact engine, with a different character and higher power output. Power climbs to 168 horsepower, 8 units more than with the previous XDiavel. Torque is slightly reduced but remains 12.8 mkg of muscle in the belly. On the other hand, these maximum values are reached at much higher revs compared to the previous model.
It doesn't care. It readily proclaims itself one of the most powerful power-cruisers in the world. Ahead of it, only the Triumph Rocket 3 Stormose more watts. And much more weight: the English model weighs almost 80 kg more. In Bologna, the XDiavel weighs only 229 kg (to which the approximately 20 liters of fuel must be added) – which represents a 6 kg reduction from the previous model.
Once you accept that you can no longer see the engine or its stylized machining marking, you take time to admire the new spoked wheels with machined spokes; especially the rear one, which is widely showcased thanks to the monobras and tire overflow with its 240 mm width. You choke back as you note that the transmission is no longer by belt, a traditional custom feature, and that the trellis frame has been scrapped – it is replaced by a monocoque aluminum frame – you settle into the wide seat, place your feet forward and tell yourself that lightning will quickly take over. Fortunately, the Italian wildcat is guided by a large 50 mm inverted fork and stopped by enormous 330 mm brake discs themselves bitten by Stylema calipers. Simply the same equipment as the previous generation of hypersportive Panigale V4.
A Ducati proudly defends its design, its power, its premium aura – and its electronics. On board is a new and larger 6.9-inch color TFT screen, 4 Riding Modes, traction control, a quickshifter, a wheelie control, an IMU to refine the intervention of certain assists, cornering ABS, 3 Power Modes, a Launch Control, a cruise control, a Bluetooth module for smartphone connectivity and backlit switches.
The XDiavel V4 seizes a different type of beauty and bestiality than its predecessor, which explored a new identity and new challenges for the Bologna brand. It presents more watts, more desire, almost more sensuality, and demands much more reverence: intended to replace the XDiavel S, it demands 3,000 euros more. Or even 8,000 from the XDiavel Dark, the previous base version. If the devil burns in hell, his hand will have the same effect on your wallet.
